I'm just guessing here, as I haven't read the book yet.

Is it El Al, the Israeli airline? In all caps, that would be EL AL.

Reading is freedom.
The mind soars, no earthly cares,
no limitations.
A Maggers Haiku, 2005

Years ago my mother used to say to me... "In this world, Elwood, you can be oh so smart or oh so pleasant."
Well, for years I was smart.
I recommend pleasant.
You may quote me.

Maggers has it right. It is El Al (two words), the name of the Israeli airline, not E1A1. Jack is making a joke, since his dad's flight had a large number of Hassidic Jews as passengers. (They could be identified by their clothing, since they wear black robes and hats, and the men have full beards.)

Whew, I'm glad we cleared that one up! Smile I was beginning to wonder how such a strange-looking word could have slipped by me.

Thanks a lot, Maggers and BrettM. But, hey, I didn't realize it was joke.

I'm glad too! Everything's cleared. But from your point of view, if this word is strange-looking, how can I see it from my point of view? Can you imagine that? Big Grin

You said "Hai", not "Hi". That's good Japanese accent! Wink
