Sadly, conversion therapy was an accepted practice going back as far as the 1920's. Some of it was simply hypnotic suggestion, other measures were much more extreme.
Electro Shock
Nausea-inducing drugs
Forced heterosexual relations
If these Behavior Modification techniques failed, there was always institutionalization.
It wasn't until 1973 when Homosexuality was removed from the DSM as a mental illness.
