I have the banner ads on mine and don't find them a problem or in the way at all. In fact I check them all the time to see if there are any good ones. One just popped up on there today. A $20 Amazon gift card for only $10! I was on that one immediately! You just pick that one on your Kindle and they email you the promo code and the link to buy it. I just wish I could get more than one. Good luck!

Is that a feature of the new wifi Kindle? I don't have any ads on my 3G version.

It's a feature of the new Kindles "with special offers." Basically you pay $25 less to put up with ads on the front page of the Kindle (not in the books). There are both Wifi and 3G versions.

I dunno... for an extra $25, a Kindle without ads seems like a better deal to me.

I don't even notice the banner to be honest and it does not show up while you are reading. But sometimes I go to the Special Offers tab and check it out. That's where I saw the Amazon half price deal.

If I ever decide to buy a new one, I think I'll pass on the ads. Amazon already sends me plenty of emails full of special offers.

Couldn't agree more. It's the ebook equivalent of a GAP t-shirt. In that case you're paying them to advertise for them. In this case you're paying them to advertise to you. The hell with that.
