Garth Jennings.

Still wanted Dead or Alive for crimes against Douglas Adams, Humanity, and Literature.

Anyone else have crimes again literature, great authors, or even good taste they'd like to report?

I'll start with the obvious. Starship Troopers, The Puppet Masters and that silly little Red Planet animated miniseries.

I'll second that, and add WIND TALKERS.

Yeah I will second that nomination. Trying to think of one other than the obvious Michael Mann project that shall remain unnamed but coming up blank at the moment.

Oh, how about the American version of GODZILLA? Yeah someone needs a punch in the throat for that one.

YES! Seconded.

I'd like to add The Relic to the list. A rather poor movie based off of a great book, and the movie people decided to leave out Agent Pendergast from the film... wtf? That's like leaving out Glaeken's sword from... I forget the name of that film now.

In a slightly diferent vein, The Bourne Supremacy was not a terrible movie, but bore only the very slightest resemblance to it's namesake novel.
In the movie his wife was killed off early as being unnecessary to the story, but in the novel the whole story hinges on her kidnapping and Bourne's need to rescue her.
Two completely different stories and a typical example of how hollywood usually bastardizes the source material.

The Bold Type giveth, the Fine Print taketh away.

To keep this thread going, we can add The Postman. Although Brin defended the damned thing, saying that Costner brought the money so he can do it his way. Wimp.

Speaking of the Bourne movies, I read The Bourne Identity shortly after having seen and enjoyed the movie. Completely different. I never got around to reading Supremacy or Ultimatum but based on reading the first novel I think I'd enjoy the movies much more.

That may be the topic for another thread. Are there movies that you feel surpass the source material? Fight Club, The Princess Bride, U-Turn/ Stray Dogs immediately come to mind. Also a whole slew of Stephen King. But that can be for both categories. Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist and The Shining (Kubrick's version) are spectacular. But then there's the tv movie version of The Shining, The Tommyknockers, Dreamcatcher and The Langoliers.

I don't think anything based off of any of Dean Koontz's novels have been that good. Legitimately or not. (I'm looking at you High Tension.)

This could be three threads (or just one with a scorecard):
1. Movies that suck compared to the book
2. Movies that did the book justice or were true to the source material
3. Movies that took a steaming pile of crap and made it awesome!

Examples:
1. The Keep (duh!)
2. Fight Club (I don't think the movie was an improvement, but a great interpretation)
3. The Lord of the Rings (Yes, I went there. I hate the books, but love the movies)

I also think that Princess Bride, HHTTG and Watchmen would all fall into category 2.
