I was at Dark Delcacies on Sunday for the David Morrell signing and he was talking with a screenwriter, Matt Venne, who adapted Pelts and is currently writing Rambo 5. Just thought I'd share that.

I liked ROCKY BALBOA considerable. And that's it. The ROCKY saga went out on a high note. FIRST BLOOD was =really= good. And then the RAMBO series went downhill mucho pronto. Who is waiting to see RAMBO 5?

Really?? I thought that the whole premise behind the fight (computer simulation says Rocky could beat the younger guy??) was incredibly dumb, which killed the entire movie for me.

That and you'd think the man would know how to freakin' block. Even I could block more punches than he did.

Yeah, I know that his whole schtick was that he could take a beating but you'd think he'd have learned how to block at some point.

What number was the Rambo that came out most recently?

Why do I always do this to myself???

The most recent film, Rambo, was number 4. I finally saw it on DVD a couple of weeks ago, and I thought it was the second-best film in the series, after First Blood. Hyper-violent and ultra-gory, the film depicts war is hell on earth, which is actually kind of counter to what movies 2 and 3 did.

I was amazed by both Rambo and Rocky Balboa. The latter had its problem, but Stallone played Rocky as a 60-year-old man, and I thought it was very well done, overall.

Well, Lola, I don't think the first ROCKY was about boxing, per se. To corny up, it was about becoming the person you know you can be. Sure the fight wasn't realistic. Or was it? Creed thought Rocky would be easy pickings. He came out punching for a quick knockout. And Rocky knew there was =no way= he could outbox Apollo. He =had= to come out swinging.

Professional boxers are more cautious in the early rounds. OK...let's figure this guy out... (Though the great Hagler-Hearns fight was an exception.)

Stallone knew the last couple of ROCKY films stank on ice. He wanted to leave ROCKY fans with a good feeling.

He did it.

I actually did like the first Rocky and knew it all about the underdog coming out on top. I haven't seen the others except for the last film. The whole thing about the computer simulation was just too dumb for me to get over.

Once a movie presents something that I think is completely flawed and brainless, I pretty much dislike the entire movie. If some intelligent reason for engaging in the fight could have been presented, then I might not have disliked Balboa so much.

I did see Rambo #4 and was surprised that I liked it.

I've always liked Rocky as a character. Seems to me to be a really good hombre. Stallone, of course, might be a little different.

Stallone should stick to Rambo flicks versus Rocky. Let the Rocky concept die as it should. What's he going to do in this next one? Throw his cane at the opponent? Run over his foot with his wheel chair?

There is no wise man without fault

I'm pretty sure that "Rocky Balboa" was Stallone's farewell to the Rocky series, and I suspect the new Rambo movie will be the same for that one. It's important to remember he didn't just act in those movies, he also wrote the screenplays for all of them. Hell, the first Rocky movie got Best Picture, he got Best Actor and a nomination for Best Screenplay.

I'll admit I like his stuff a bit better when somebody else writes his dialog. My favorite all-time Stallone move is "Demolition Man". Of course, Denis Leary as an anarchist and Sandra Bullock as eye candy didn't hurt that film a bit. Yes, I know that as science fiction the thing had the plausibility of E.T. My favorite part is in the Underground. "Best burger I've had in years".

What might be sweet as the last lines in the last RAMBO flick:
"We won. They let us win this time."
