Today is a very sad day for me. As a tried and true Golden Girls fan it saddens me to report that Estelle Getty who played Sophia Petrillo, the wise-cracking mother to Bea Arthur's Dorothy Zbornak has passed away. She was 84 years old due to turn 85 this coming Friday.

She had been suffering from Lewy Body Dementia for the past several years.

Her health had slowly slipped in the last few years, robbing her of her memory and ability to effectively communicate. Ms. Getty's assistant had been giving periodic updates on her website. He reported the news today.

Sounds as though it might be a blessing that she passed, although it's never easy to deal with. Both my parents were big fans of the series so I've seen my fair share but wasn't quite as awed by it as you.

On a different Golden Girl note, I saw in today's paper that Rue McClennan? is starring in Sordid Lives, a new TV series premiering soon-maybe tonight. The article I read singled her out as being exceptionally funny in it. I'll se if I can supply a bit more info soon.

Sordid Lives is based on a movie of the same name. It is a character film and very funny in a white trash sort of way. Its about a family dealing with the death of their matriarch and all the skeletons that come out as a result of her passing. The series Sordid Lives takes place before the film but it airs on Logo, a network geared for the gay and lesbian audience. I don't get Logo, I do get it on demand, but I am not gay enough to watch it.
