In the comics, Iron Man originally wore bulky yellow armor. The picture pictures that original armor. Later (in both the movie and the comic), Tony Stark upgrades that bulky armor to the red and gold armor most folks are familiar with.

I also have a copy of Iron Man #1. I wish I had "Tales of Suspense" #39 (March 1963), instead. Iron Man #1 didn't come out until five years later.

One of my favorite Iron Man stories is as so:

Tony Stark becomes a drunkard and passes the torch to a friend, James Rhodes, to take over the chores as Iron Man. Stark sobers up; Rhodes can't handle the suit of armor which drives him renegade. Stark dons the original suit of armor (that Auskar so kindly posted on the cover of Tales of Suspense #39) and battles Rhodes. Old costume versus new. Great return for Stark as Iron Man. Great story.

AC

P.S. Only Daredevil (especially the Miller stories) rivals Iron Man's exploits.

Actually, in the very first comics, it was bulky gray armor, when Tony is kidnapped and imprisoned and invents the armor to fight his way out from the clutches of his captors.

Then out spoke brave Horatius, the Captain of the Gate: "To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late; And how can man die better than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, and the temples of his Gods,"
"Well, John Henry said to the Cap'n, "A man ain't nuthin' but a man. But, before I let that steam drill beat me, gonna die with my hammer in my hand, Lawd, Lawd, gonna die with my hammer in my hand."

It looks exactly the same as he does in the comic. . .?

Where's the fun in that? Good work, legendary F/X guru Stan Winston, you've earned your cheque this time around!
