By The Sword **SPOILERS** - webby - 06-01-2008 Warning! Here be SPOILERS for By the Sword!! Stop now if you haven't read it yet! Final warning! Who's ready? Another thrilling episode in the Repairman Jack saga! I enjoyed every syllable! It was an especially interesting experience reading Secret Histories immediately afterward and recognizing some of the things that have been in or around Jack's whole life. Some of the things that stood out for me in By the Sword: Glaeken and Jack finally meet! Woo-Hoo! Poor Dawn! Out of the frying pan, into the fire, BACK into the frying pan! The Lady. Now we know there is only one and she isn't "Mother Earth", at least not exactly. Maybe she is the truth behind that myth? I hope more will be explained soon. Like Jack, not knowing much is making me crazy. Kenji. Those darn Kickers aren't out of the picture yet and neither is the Lodge. I was kinda hoping a mini Black Wind would finish them off at the end - the Kickers at least. Jack still hasn't told Gia the truth about her "accident". He has definitely put it off too long now. Gia's going to explode if he ever tells her! Speaking of Gia - could her secret paintings be of the strange landscapes Glaeken and Rasalom once fought on? Glaeken describes them as surreal, iirc. And of course, the sword. I think Jack was right to hang on to it. He couldn't have stopped the Black Wind without it and he might find himself in another situation one day where it is the only weapon that will work. I'm sure we'll find out eventually. Can't wait for the next installment! By The Sword **SPOILERS** - Bluesman Mike Lindner - 06-01-2008 webby Wrote:Warning! Here be SPOILERS for By the Sword!! Stop now if you haven't read it yet! Final warning!SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! BE AWARE! MONSTROUS SPOILERS! DID I MENTION... SPOILERS! Oh boy oh boy oh boy...what a book! But there was a syllable on page 147 I thought could have been rendered better. Just my opinion...:p I think maybe's Gia's paintings represent the night sky if Rasalom's plan comes to fruition. And I'm not sure at all Jack can =ever= tell Gia why Emma died. Why would he? How could it help? Sometimes you just have to keep bad truths to yourself. And if that hurts you--'cause you're a fundamentally honest guy--better you should hurt, than someone you love. I was surprised lying to Kusum bothered Jack. Kusum was an utter madman, who fed two gentle ladies to the hellbeasts, and wanted to give Vicky to them too. There's a time to adhere to your code, and a time to say, as Jack did, "I lied." And use the napalm. I'm sending Kenji the book tomorrow, Webby--let's let him find out for himself!:hand: I bet he'll do a supersonic Limbo! By The Sword **SPOILERS** - cobalt - 06-01-2008 SPOILERS!!!!! BELOW I agree Webby, wonderful, just wonderful. I love the tie ins to Black Wind, one of my favorite books. But most of all....poor Emma....comforting "someone" in the cemetery. One of the most chilling scenes in the Adversary series. I loved the book with its major tie in the Black Wind. And Kenji! I think that the best part of all was in the afterward section when FPW stated that he was planning sixteen to seventeen books in the RJ series instead of the previously mentioned fourteen to fifteen. Plus a HEAVILY revised rewrite of NIGHTWORLD. All bets are off as to where the series is going now with the baby and the sword hinted at playing a role in the new NIGHTWORLD. I am kind of wondering about something though. If there is only one woman (and dog) I am curious about just what kind of being / creature / entity she is with her being killed and skinned when she was Anya in Gateways. I also can’t wait to find out more about the secret history of the world! By The Sword **SPOILERS** - joelfinkle - 06-04-2008 Can someone remind me who's buried in the cemetary under the dead grass? I think it must be from one of the Adversary cycle and not a Jack book, IIRC. My brain is trying to tell me it's from Nightworld, and that would make this foreshadowing... but I could be wrong. I'm only about 80 pages in, so I skipped to the bottom here... 1) Posessing the sword must have kept Naka young -- he should be in his 60s, not 40's as Jack surmises. 2) I'm not buying that there were enough Hidden Face cultists left to be skilled at their surgeries... but other than that, I can accept a resurgence.
