Vampire Hunter D - Anders Monsen - 07-06-2005
I recently read this book written by horror master Hideyuki Kikuchi (translated from the Japanese and published in 2005 by Dark Horse Press). The novel is set in 12,090 A.D., where vampires assumed the roles of nobility among (mostly) cowering humans via vampiric black arts and gentically engineered monster enforcers. In a world that's a blend of hi-tech and medievalism, various hunters arise who attempt to kill werewolves, witches, and vampires; the greatest of these hunters is a young half-vampire named "D." Sixteen additional novels comprise this saga. The blurb on the cover hints at a "hit motion picture," but I have never heard of it. I believe the movie is animated. Anyone out there who's seen this picture? Opinions?

Welcome aboard Anders. As for the movie, it is one of the better Anime films I've seen. It is definitely worth the rent.

I've watched the movie. It was better than some, not as good as others.

I saw the anime film. I didn't care for it, but I am not a fan of anime.

I've seen the movie a few times. I've never heard of the book, though. The movie you can probably find at Blockbuster. There's a sequel, but I haven't been able to get my hands on it yet.

I watched the movie yesterday and admit to great disappointment. As usual, the screenplay differs widely from the book in many cases. Doris Lang in the movie bcomes a helpless waif. The animation is curious blend of cliched characters from anime (females: huge eyes, microscopic mouths, petite bodies; males: tall and slender), along with dark washed out colors. In my opinion the book is far better, and the scene in the book where D takes care of four enemies in one minute (15 seconds per opponent), is left out of the movie from all the other changes made to time and character allegiances. Also, in the book, D's sword is superb; in the movie he seems slow and almost human-like.

i thought the anime was good, visually pretty impressive, but it suffers from poor 80s dialogue like most anime. it's like everything they say is an inch away from being meaningful, emotional or witty.
