NIGHTWORLD 2012 Thoughts (Spoilers) - rjack_fan - 06-10-2012 Alan's Death! OMG! It was the most horrifying, loving thing to read. I'm glad he was dragged off, I felt no need to read a detailed accounting of his remains. A classic case of leaving things up to the imagination being more horrifying. NIGHTWORLD 2012 Thoughts (Spoilers) - madh0us3 - 06-10-2012 So fantastic, I just finished it. An epic end to an epic series. I had not read any version of Nightworld yet, so I was completely fresh to this. After such a buildup over so many books, I had kind of expected the epic final battle to span half the book, but it was done nicely the way it was. I know FPW has said there are going to be another book or two covering some of the back story, but I'm pretty sad that the future progression of the story will not continue.. I guess it had to end somewhere though, and FPW has been more than generous with the seventeen RJ books he has given us already. I had really expected the Oculus and the remaining yeniceri to make an appearance, as well as the last rakosh, but it was very cool seeing how much the characters from The Touch came into play. Up until Nightworld, I was really just wondering how and why The Touch was even on the Secret History list. Ba.. I feel like his personality didn't really stay consistent though. In The Touch, there is mention of his "special" fertilizer and how he dealt with intruders, then in Nightworld, we have him playing nice with Bati and company for the necklaces when we know he was dying to get back to the Missus. Seemed a little out of character for him in my opinion. As for the technical issues with the book itself. My spine was printed right-side-up, but the one floating quote mark is there on page 159, near the bottom of the page. NIGHTWORLD 2012 Thoughts (Spoilers) - RootsReggae - 06-17-2012 sjfwhite Wrote:Like an earlier poster, I am trying to figure out where/how the Occulus fit in here. Initially I thought she was the little girl at the end but the addition of the dog and the allusion to her age suggested that The Lady had once again returned and the world was once again sentient from the point of view of the Ally. Paul want to pains to bring in previous major characters from the RMJ series but where is the Occulus? I had this question after reading The Dark At The End. I was sure the occulus would turn up in this new version of Nightworld. I guess it's really not that important because it is a great book, 5 stars. Still I'd love to pick The Man's brains on this one and find out his reasoning. The occulus was in at least three books. The previous occulus is the reason Jack's father was killed. The person who holds the power is the only other person aside from Glaeken that has a connection to the ally. I just re-read Legacies right before Nightworld and I was wondering if Alicia Clayton would make it through Nightworld not expecting that she would actually make an appearance, as well as Nadia and Lyle. I thought that was really cool. Yet again it makes me wonder why the occulus/yencari were forgotten. I liked that Hank switched places with Carole's husband from the 92' version and that the cops that rob him are kickers. I don't know if my memory is correct but in the 92' version wasn't there some redemption where Carole's husband lived a day longer than the people that robbed him? Didn't he see them dead? It's kind of funny FPW made her husband a scumbag that leaves her to gamble and womanize. I laughed. He was a hero in the first version and his death by alien impregnation paves the way for Carole to have her moment with Bill. I'll be looking forward to Cold City now and some good ole' fashion non-supernatural fix-its. Thanks Mister Wilson Bet book series ever NIGHTWORLD 2012 Thoughts (Spoilers) - RootsReggae - 06-17-2012 Also I have a question. When they go to meet the tenants Jack remembers meeting George, I however do not. When did Jack meet him? No, Hank Treece freaked out and left Carole to save himself while she was trying to think of others. There's a passage in which he thinks to himself that it took a crisis to realize that their relationship was shallow but that he'd go back for her eventually anyway because he was "nothing if not loyal" (pp. 213-214 of the Jove paperback). He really comes across as a selfish ass who gets what's coming to him. As to seeing his assailants dead, no, they were gone, just like in the new version. With the exception of the assailants turning out to be Kickers, Hank Treece's fate was basically identical to Hank Thompson's. He wanted Carole to come with him and his stockpile and she wouldn't right? I guess I didn't think he deserved it for not trusting in glaeken plan. Toell - 06-23-2012 I finished the new version in a few mad sessions over the last couple of days. Hopefully, I'll have more to say later, but right now, I have to say this: I cried. Damn you, Paul, you made me cry. |
