LOST... the 4th season - Maggers - 03-22-2008

I love listening to the podcasts on abc.com of the authors discussing LOST.

http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/index?pn=podcast#t=3421

In the 3/21/08 podcast, Lindelof and Cuse confirm:

1. the list Marc posted earlier as the Oceanic 6 is correct.
2. Aaron may be in danger being raised by Kate (they referenced her checkered background and uneasy relationships with men)
3. we will learn, though not in a flashback, about the 4-toed statue and the Black Rock, but they didn't say when.
4. they coined a wonderful phrase, "Lockejaw," meaning Locke has jammed a grenade between your jaws.

And other stuff which I won't mention here since it could be considered spoilers of a sort, though I don't think what I learned from Cuse and Lindelof is anything that I hadn't guessed at previously, and it's all very vague anyway.

The podcasts are enjoyable, though you get to see the nerdy side of the writers.

Maggers Wrote:Yeah, you're probably right. I think those muscle guys on the boat who were skeet shooting with sub machine guns (talk about overkill) got their dreams answered when they were let loose on the Island to shoot anything that moved. I imagine those were their orders.

I still don't think Ben will shed any tears for the loss of Karl and Danielle. They might not be dead, just left for dead.

Yikes! That brings awful images to mind. I can see Claire running for her life with Aaron in her arms. She takes a bullet in the back and falls, on top of Aaron, shielding him. He lives. Kate takes him.

If nobody gets offed when the show returns I'll switch opinions and go with the Ben theory. It's not an act that he would shy away from.

The captain - who does he work for and what other groups are trying to reach the Island?

The freighter captain didn't react very strongly when Sayid reported Michael as the saboteur. Remember the note from someone, we don't know who, that said not to trust the captain? Maybe there's someone else on the freighter, someone other than Michael (like maybe Kelvin?) who's working for yet someone else (maybe the real Dharma people, Kelvin's employers when he was pushing the button in the hatch).

OK, I'm getting confused in my own theory. There are too many groups wanting to get to the Island:

1. Confirmed - Charles Widmore, who wants to find the Island, probably for the power the Island possesses, to use for his own nefarious purposes.

2. Unconfirmed - the Dharma people, who, frankly, should have no problem getting to the Island since the were able to set up the Dharma initiative so long ago. I wonder why they've never sought to avenge or do anything about the Purge of their people 16 years ago. Or at least, it seems they haven't done anything. We don't know that.

3. Partially confirmed - Penny Widmore, she's been searching for Desmond for 3 years and finally made contact with him in "The Constant." She said she knew about the Island (from the electromagnetic blast heard round the world when the hatch imploded) and promised Desmond she'd find him. She told Charlie she didn't know about a boat off the Island, so most likely she now is preparing another group to find the Island.

4. Unknown - the power behind Ben - whoever/whatever that may be. Are they located off Island, on Island? Who the hell knows.

5. Incomprehensible - The Island itself - which seems to be trying to keep people who are on the Island from leaving and keep anyone else from finding the Island.

And if they do leave, it seems the Island wants them back, except for Ben's people, who have a way of leaving and returning without any ill effects, or so it seems.

I'm not sure where to go with all of this. I am, as usual, terminally confused when attempting to figure out the relationships and plot lines at play in LOST.

Is the Island a sentinent being? Interesting how Michael couldn't kill himself. Also reminded me of how Juliets ex-husband got run down by the bus. If it can think is it all powerful?

I stand corrected, Sayed is part of the six. But I still think Ben is the "best" television series villain in a long time.

Who can say exactly what "the Island" is? Is it a sentient being? Maybe. It feels that way to me. Is there a power behind the Island, creating all the Island manifestations? Probably. What is it? Who the hell knows.

In the hospital basketball court, Hurley yells at Jack that “It wants us back.” In the last episode, Tom yells at Michael that “the Island won’t let you” commit suicide.

In the latest podcast, the writers were asked if the visions we've seen on the show were real animal (as in the cat seen outside Patchy's house), apparition, or a variation of the Island Monster. I took the latter to mean an image generated by the Island. The writers said:
Eme (Eko's brother) on the Island - Monster
Dave (Hurley's bathrobed friend) – apparition
Ben’s mother – apparition
Spider that paralyzed Nikki and Paulo - Monster
Kate's horse – apparition
Walt as he appears to Locke – Monster

I would add to that Juliet’s ex-husband being hit by a bus is in the Monster category, generated by the Island.

It seems the Island's power is not limited to the Island, if it can effect people's off-Island experiences.

This one kind of jumps out at me. I never suspected the Island/smoke monster had anything to do with that.

Yeah, me neither when I first saw the episode. It's very subtle, but if you go back and listen to the beginning of the spider bite scene, you can hear the Island Monster noise, the one that sounds like the clicking of a NYC taxi cab meter.

So is the abc.com website. You can view the episodes in toto; you can watch coming attractions and highlights of previous episodes; you can read episode recaps. Below is the link for the recaps section.

I was prowling in the basement at me place o' woik on Friday, scanning what H-carts of books needed to be brought up. And two of our matchless Receiving men were talking about LOST. "Oh, man...it's gotta be the greatest show ever!" "Gotta agree with that, Ronnie," said the chief. And I hadda chime in with a question: "Guess you guys never saw HOWDY DOODY, did yez?"Wink
