Rise of the Silver Surfer - Dave F - 01-03-2007 Bluesman Mike Lindner Wrote:Ah, the Watcher! My best recollection of him was an FF book in the...late 70s? We had a fine comics store in Brockport, and the owner and I buddied up quick. Let's see...far as I recall, Dr. Doom contrived a trap for the FF. They're trapped in a room that Doom is evacuating. Reed is trying to think of something. There's not enough air left for the Torch to flame-on. Sue Storm is almost unconscious, but still trying to use her force-field to gather whatever air is left into a bubble around the heroes. And Ben Grimm, my man, is using the last of his strength to try to punch through the floor to find air. The Watcher sees all this. He takes a step forward to use his power to rescue the only Terrans he's ever been able to call "friends." And steps back. He cannot violate his oath... LOL - as I remember the Watcher violates his oath on frequent occasions - including on Zenn La - leading to the creation of the Silver Surfer For any fans of old marvel / Neil Gaiman try looking up Marvel 1602. Puts a bunch of classic marvel characters back into Elisabethan times. As uaual the story telling is excellant as befits Mr Gaiman. The art is pretty amazing too. (And the Watcher plays his part in the story) Rise of the Silver Surfer - law dawg - 01-04-2007 KRW Wrote:I just caught the trailer today. Looks great and I hope the movie lives up to it. Kirk sticks to the Prime Directive. The oath holds only long enough to ratchet up the suspense. Rise of the Silver Surfer - KRW - 01-06-2007 law dawg Wrote:It looked to suck great blocky nuts. I can never remember how it goes exactly. Rise of the Silver Surfer - law dawg - 01-07-2007 KRW Wrote:Articulate as usual.Hey, I call 'em like I sees 'em. And Jessica Alba goes a looooong way to redeeming suckdom. If she couldn't get me to check out the flick that says a lot to me. But maybe I'm being unduly harsh and need to give it a chance. But I swear to God if I see one single blocky nut...... Rise of the Silver Surfer - KRW - 01-10-2007 law dawg Wrote:But I swear to God if I see one single blocky nut...... Don't worry, "The Thing" keeps his pants on the whole time! Rise of the Silver Surfer - saynomore - 05-17-2007 I've been tracking this movie because all the talk about this movie telling the Galactus tale has intrigued me. But woe with me, I came across this today on the web. Read on if you want to know how the movie varies from the comic book version. AC SPOILER: Ain't it Cool News reported yesterday that Galactus, the Silver Surfer's boss, who in the comics is a giant humanoid often seen wearing a pink and purple armor (complete with big protruding things on his helmet) (see: Wikipedia), will instead in this movie be portrayed by... a cloud. Now, I'm open to movies adapting things a bit differently from comic books, especially when it comes to costumes and such that are too gaudy and unrealistic to be taken seriously on the big screen. So, I can see why maybe Galactus' look might have been changed. But... a cloud? Now, admittedly, there was a version a few years back in the "Ultimate" version of Marvel Comics, in which Galactus was a swarm of insect-like robots instead of a giant guy dressed in purple. That, however, is not the way most people know him, and so to take the concept even further astray and to make him a "cloud" is just kind of silly and frankly, dumb. This is a movie in which you have a walking rockpile, a stretchy guy, a guy on fire, and a silver guy on a freakin' SURFBOARD. I don't think a giant guy dressed in purple is such a stretch. Color me both pink and purple for how disappointed I am in this decision. I cannot ever imagine the original Galactus appearing in this movie. He of the big 'G' on his belt with purple short shorts, paisley white legs and a giant helmet appearing on film. It would be one of the most unintentionally hilarious things to appear on celluloid. In the Marvel Ultimate Universe Galactus appeared as a hive of bio mechanical drones. A hive mind. But they looked and reminded me so much of the Matrix movie that they would never fly either. Still, a cloud? To strike fear in the hearts of the planet? Nah. I think the best way to have Galactus appear would be as the collective fears of the populace. Something akin to "Ghostbusters". "Choose the form of the destructor" And the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man appears. Seriously, I'd be fine with a creepy looking guy with vaguely European features dressed in a black suit looking quite Rasalom-like. |
