Paging Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard, Dr. Wilson... - thisisatest - 04-25-2005

This question is primarily for F. Paul Wilson, but other doctors and patients may post as well.

What's your take on the current medical TV shows? Grey's Anatomy? House? Scrubs? etc. Do they ring true? Do you avoid them altogether? Or do you just like them for their entertainment value without giving them a medical thought whatsoever?

I'm partial to House. It has a very antagonistic protagonist.

I'm not a clinician, but I've been a hospital administrator for nearly 25 years.

I was never interested in watching a single episode of ER, for as many years as it's been on the air.

I do enjoy "Scrubs" because it's just so silly and appealing. But it's not like any hospital I know, which is why I can watch it.

Unless they are flat out funny like "Scrubs," I avoid them. I get enough of hospitals and all the doctors I can take all day long. (I don't deal with patients; I'm responsible for a faculty of 1,067 mental health care givers, largely psychiatrists. That's enough, don't you think?)

I don't work in health care, but I'm trained in microbiology and have LOTS of family in health care. I get the impression that most of those shows aren't quite true to life. According to my husband (a pharmacist), ER is accurate as far as drug used and medical jargon. I doubt Scrubs is terribly accurate, although it's hilarious!

I can't believe you didn't include General Hospital in your question. According to SOD(Soap Opera Digest), they take great pains to make sure their hospital scenes are as true-to-life as possible.

I like Grey's Anatomy and House. I don't normally get to watch either of them, but when I do, I like them both.

Don't watch them. Too much like work.

or SOD, as we insiders like to call it. I can get you break on a subscription if you let them know I referred you. Gotta keep up on the soaps!

I used to watch General Hospital (Luke and Laura days) and Days of Our Lives (Stephano, Alex, Bo and Hope, Roman and Marlena, Patch and Kayla, etc) but I can't tolerate it anymore. I also used to watch Men's Soap Opera (aka professional wrestling), but that sucks now too.

Big Grin

I'll fess up to watching both as well. GH was something to watch when stoned in college and I was into WWF right about the time Hulk Hogan was beginning to reign. I hated HH. Gimme Bret "The Hitman' Hart or Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka?.

Kids (boys) are always asking me if I watch wrestling to which I reply, "No, I have a life."
