just saw midnight mass - jamedog - 02-23-2005 I just saw Midnight Mass and all I can say is that some day, a great director will bring his vision of the fpw universe to life and we will all be able to die in peace, until then we'll have to settle for The Keep and midnight Mass sadly just saw midnight mass - Tony H - 02-23-2005 jamedog Wrote:I just saw Midnight Mass and all I can say is that some day, a great director will bring his vision of the fpw universe to life and we will all be able to die in peace, until then we'll have to settle for The Keep and midnight Mass sadlyI unfortunately saw this back when it was first released on DVD about a year ago. I knew going into it that it was going to be a poor adaptation as it went straight to video. If it is any consolation I remember Paul saying the it got picked up for video distrobution purely by luck that it was supposed to be either a student film or a resume builder for the director. Some studio exec saw a copy and figured it was done well enough for a distobution. I wonder if Paul got his SAG card for his cameo. Even if he didn't he still has the distinction of being listed in one of my favorite site databases as an actor. Paul was certainly the BEST actor in Midnight Mass, which although that might be tantamount to being the leading scorer on an AHL team, still puts him well ahead of Stephen King, the WORST actor in The Stand and some other movies we've seen! BTW Paul. You probably told us before, but how did you end up on screen in MM? I assume they asked you? Or was it something you negotiated for? Either way, your part was the only good thing about the first few minutes I was able to watch. just saw midnight mass - Biggles - 02-23-2005 jamedog Wrote:I just saw Midnight Mass and all I can say is that some day, a great director will bring his vision of the fpw universe to life and we will all be able to die in peace, until then we'll have to settle for The Keep and midnight Mass sadly I totally agree. The two most frustrating things about Paul's books, for me, are: 1. He doesn't get the movie deals that Dean Koontz (whose work has been badly treated by Hollywood until the last few years) and Stephen King (whose work has been well-adapted in several cases) have gotten, and 2. His books aren't available as unabridged audio books. The latter issue is not as important to me because I'll buy all of Paul's books anyway, but with all the driving I do it would be great to just stash away the printed book and listen to the audio book while I'm on the road. The first point, though, really PISSES ME OFF. I've read lots of Koontz and almost as much King, but Paul's work plays much better in my mind's eye. I can see The Lanague Chronicles or Midnight Mass (with sequels), and certainly all of the RJ books in my mind's eye, and a great director with a reasonable budget could make them into legitimate rivals to Star Wars, Dracula, and the Indiana Jones movies, respectively. just saw midnight mass - Medusa - 02-23-2005 I bought MM on DVD for $.99 on EBAY. I thought I had gotten a good deal. Until I watched it. I hate to say it, but I could only put up with about 30 minutes then I took it out of the DVD and threw it away. The acting was terrible. It's a shame because I just LOVED the book. just saw midnight mass - Mike - 02-23-2005 undefinedundefinedundefined Medusa Wrote:I bought MM on DVD for $.99 on EBAY. I really liked the book and nothing pisses me off more than having some half-assed director screw it up for me by turning a good book into a piece of celluloid crapola! I was less than thrilled with the movie of "The Keep", too. I'm hoping that the third time is a charm for FPW. just saw midnight mass - Biggles - 02-23-2005 Medusa Wrote:I bought MM on DVD for $.99 on EBAY. I thought I had gotten a good deal. As far as The Keep is concerned, I saw it after I read Paul's book and was very disappointed in the movie. I am very thankful, though, that I read he book first. If I had seen the movie before reading the book, I would most likely have never read the book! Looking at things in retrospect, that would have deprived me of many hours of enjoyment over the intervening years, including the great times I've had at GUs and on this board. It's hard to imagine, given how much I've been involved, what things would have been like. It's kinda like that first drag on a cigarette or mug of Rolling Rock (or the first time in the back seat of a '57 Chevy). just saw midnight mass - Jay #1 - 02-24-2005 Missed seeing it thank goodness. No offense to FPW if he actually liked it, but the fact that I never even saw any previews for it... and didn't know it was out until after I saw a dvd sitting on the shelf.... I just decided that that was too many bad omens. *grin* jamedog Wrote:I just saw Midnight Mass and all I can say is that some day, a great director will bring his vision of the fpw universe to life and we will all be able to die in peace, until then we'll have to settle for The Keep and midnight Mass sadly just saw midnight mass - Maggers - 02-24-2005 Biggles Wrote:You probably should have kept it and had Paul autograph it (as I did), It would be worth more than the $.99 you paid for it then. I suspect that few of us, if any, view his works with dollars signs in our eyes. The vast majority of us are in this for the sheer thrill and fun of reading great books. |
