An error is a mistake. A "fatal" error is a mistake than can (or will) kill you.

In short, you make a mistake (do something wrong) and end up dead because of it.

In computer terms, it is a processing error that stops your computer from running until you reboot. Usually accompanied by the the infamous 'blue screen of death'.
