Bargain-priced thrillers - fpw - 01-02-2009

I'm doing my part in these cash-strapped times: To start off the new year right, here are new bargain-priced ($4.99) editions of a pair of medical thrillers from my backlist.

Implant is straightforward suspense with an intriguing anti-villain (sort of the opposite of an anti-hero). The often snarky Kirkus Reviews said it "features an attractive and well-spoken villain whose warped take on things is understandable, if not justified...A terrific story." If you don't like politicians, you'll enjoy watching a number of them sent off to that Great Filibuster in the Sky via a method as insidious as it is ingenious. More reviews and synopses here.

Deep as the Marrow - libertarians love this novel. It's more of a political thriller, involving the fallout from the president's decision to call off the war on drugs and legalize the damn stuff. A character named Poppy stole the show and has generated more mail than anyone outside of Repairman Jack. The Associated Press called it "Truly inspired in conception and perfect in execution." (This is one time you can believe AP.) More reviews and synopses here.

I love Implant; I think it your most under-appreciated novel besides Reborn. In fact, I usually use it as an introductory book to lure new readers to the cause if I know that they aren't into horror. I agree wholeheartedly with Kirkus on Duncan; he is one of my favorite villians(or anti-villians, I like it) ever.

Both are great, but Deep as the Marrow is another one of my favorites. Poppy is a great character, she made the story for me.

Outside of the Repairman Jack series, "Deep As the Marrow" is my all-time favorite novel of yours, Paul.

In fact, it's on my top 20 all time favorite fiction novels.

I really should go back and re-read my DatM. It's been too long. I'll put it on the list.

Excellent; I never got around to reading these, and now it looks like there's no excuse not to.

I just finished "By the Sword" today (excellent). I have one or both of these on my newly booked bookshelf. Maybe I'll pick one up. I'm also considering re-reading "John Dies at the End".

Speaking of bargain-priced books for the cash-strapped: I picked up a near-mint condition soft-back copy of Sibs at Goodwill for the amazing price of $1.98, and much to my pleasant surprise it had also been autographed by The Man!

(Good story, too, by the way)
