I mean, a place that is populated primarily by monsters? Thats....too trite for FPW. Remember in Conspiracies (the most underrated of the RJ series), Melanie said the Otherness contained all the answers to the various conspiracies alive in the world. A grand unification of all theories. When the UFO guy and the Militia guy went down the ladder into the Otherness, they could see....well, something (as opposed to the pure darkness) and were exclaiming that Melanie was right in her theory. So I find it hard to believe that the Otherness is simply a place populated by monsters. Thats just way too pedestrian for someone like FPW.
There have been hints about the Otherness in all the books... and entity, a place where chew wasps reside, a place with answers, where the Q'qer and Rakoshi were created...
But I just cannot believe its a 'monster inhabitated' place.

I envision The Otherness realm as a place where chaos rules. Evil and pain work hand and hand. Dark places that feed on whatever gets trapped or sent into it's hungry maw. Creatures of nightmares prowl and pounce. A true Hell.

You are a nasty man, Paul. But we already knew that. I think I'll relax and reread a couple of Lovecraft stories this afternoon. (No option except to reread, since I had and read every bit of fiction he published before they lowered the age to vote just too late to do me any good).
I'm in The Libertarian Enterprise this week, actually in the ToC and not just the letters. It won't be generally popular with most foodies. (I was in a bad mood when I typed it, not that I'm in a good mood now -- thinking of reposting my recipe for New Jersey Squid Chowder, which always gets Cthulhu pissed off and gives me something to shoot when he slimes his way up the Passaic River).

FWIW, "Pit and the Pendulum" is a Poe story, not a Lovecraft.
Jamo, Lovecraft didn't really "create" the Otherness so much as write stories about incomprehensible horrors just beyond the boundaries of our dimension. He's hugely influential amongst horror writers - once you start reading Lovecraft, you'll see a huge number of homages everywhere, including King, who makes Lovecraft references frequently.
If you want a sampling, you can read the story "The Call of Cthulhu" online - it's one of his most famous, and very typical of his work. Read it at Dagonbytes dot com (I would post the link, but I'm too new to do so).

Lovecraft authored Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos. Pit and Pendulum was Poe. Confused about your horror authors?
