Midnight Mass - a local perspective - beowulf - 02-25-2008

I am 100 pages into it and I have to say, WOW. What a great story and for me it is so personal. I grew up on the Jersey Shore and spent most of my life there. I spent summer as Sandy hook Beaches and as a teen I frequented the Point Pleasant Boardwalk. By my 20's I spent a lot of time in Manasquan and had too many evenings I can't recall at Jenks. My family actually lived in Lakewood for a while, but moved out just before the Orthodox influx. When FPW mentioned "Arnold Ave", I laughed, there is comedy club on Arnold ave where i have performed many times.

My point is that this book has made the horror of the events in this book SO much more real because all those places in the book are like my home. I hope that everyone gets to have a personal experience like this with a book.

Thanks FPW!

I've had a similar experience in a bad way though, as it was a recounting of a local true crime. A lot of those places struck too close to home, as it's small town and everything is largely in walking distance.

I grew up in Neptune N.J. I am sure you know where that is. All of the rest of our family came from Lakewood. I was very familiar with all of the locations and I agree, it did add to the story.

I had the same experience with Stephen King's It. I live in Bangor, Me., now and in the 80's you could have done a whole Derry tour right down town. They recently tore down the house by the waterworks and made a home for youth in crisis. ( A very good thing, to be sure) The waterworks themselves have been rehabbed. Little by little the places from It are disappearing. But it certainly was ( and is a thrill) to go sit by the Standpipe and see the place where Stanley saw the werewolf.

I ,too, hope everyone has this experience. I know it isn't the same but sometimes a little search in mapquest can help you visualize a place in anovel.

Thats one of the things I personally love about his books. For me it was the Pine Barrens and the Jersey Shore. My earlier years was cape May and my later years it was shoot the geek or play for cigarettes on the boardwalk at Seaside Heights. God those were the days. It seems so long ago and while it was going on it seemed for ever--------mark

I finished "Midnight Mass" and all I can say is "WoW"! What a great book! I was never a big Vampire fan (always preferred Lycanthropes) but this was just an amazing tale. If you haven't read it I would HIGHLY reccomend it! Excellent read!

I agree with Beowulf on MIDNIGHT MASS. The characters were well thought out. This my first non RJ novel I have read by FPW. I was stressing out somewhat that he is ending the RJ series but no more------Mark

I must agree with you on this point. I just never really got into the whole vampire thing but like other FPW books I couldn't put this one down. I would also highly recommend it.

I just wish there was a sequel to the book. I'm afraid though there will be none. Again way to go FPW--------Mark

You never know. I'd like to revisit Joe and Lacy, but I don't want simply to rehash Midnight Mass. I need to come up with another angle. But it's on a way-back burner now. Need to figure out how the last 3 Jack novels will take him to Nightworld before I worry about that.

Good things boil over on the back burner. I'm sure you'll find the right ingredients to concoct a bloody-finger-licking-good recipe.
