Most Chameleon-esque Actor - Mick C. - 12-22-2007

You have your actors like Marlon Brando or Jack Nicholson who are always pretty recognizable no matter who they play.

What actors blend into their roles the most? These are the kind of faceless actors that inhabit a role so well you often don't recognize them from film to film. I'm thinking of:

Alec Guinness - Especially in his early roles (until he became iconic in Star Wars) it was hard to remember what he looked like (as Heinlein mentioned in "Double Star"). He was perfectly cast as the spymaster Smiley in the LeCarre mini-series because he was the classic Gray Man of espionage, he just seemed to be able to blend into a character.

Philip Seymour Hoffman - Several times I've gone back and noticed he was in movies where I hadn't realized it was him until the credits - like "Almost Famous", where I didn't recognize him as Lester Bangs or in The Big Lebowski where he was the millionaire Lebowski's assistant. Amazing in "Capote".

Chris Cooper - Getting popular now, I didn't realize it was the same actor I saw in "American Beauty", "Adaptation", and "Breach" until recently.

Who else?

Mark Hamill: Everybody knows he is Luke Skywalker. But he has many talents. He IS chameleon-esque actor. When I saw trailer of Slipstream, I doubted he's Mark Hamill. "OMG! He got old? Or make-up?" He became completely different person.

And, he played Trickster in "The Flash II: Revenge of the Trickster". I couldn't believe my eyes. He played insane character, Trickster.

Star Wars, Slipstream, The Flash II: Revenge of the Trickster, you won't realize he is the same actor.

Oh, and he is voice actor of Joker in Batman animation. Big Grin

I also really like Chris Cooper. I've been a fan of his since his first movie, MATEWAN, in 1987. I particularly liked LONE STAR, which is a must see.

It was also Hamill who I straight away thought of and for the the same reasons, Star Wars & Slipstream.

Add John C. Reilly and William Macy.

Gary Oldman. Compare Dracula, The Fifth Element, and Batman Begins, for example. Alec Guinness is the main actor I can think of to compare him to.

Blake

Billy Bob Thornton: Sling Blade, Simple Plan, The Man Who Wasn't There...he's awesome actor.

Johnny Depp: Pirate, Scissorhands, William Blake, and Ed Wood. 'Nuff said.

Oh yes! Why could I forget him?! "Primal Fear" was his best performance.

Loved Billy Bob in "THE ALAMO" (even more than The Duke) and of course Depp
(anyone notice that in "Sweeney" he is made up to look like Dave Vanian, lead singer of "THE DAMNED"?)
