Casino Royale Review (no spoilers) - Susan - 11-20-2006

My hubby and I went to see the new Bond movie yesterday and loved it. And we never agree on movies! What a terrific flick.

First, you should know I'm a huge James Bond fan. I've seen every movie and even read some of Ian Fleming's work. Sean Connery is my favorite Bond because you knew his masculinity wasn't an act.

Casino Royale is unlike any James Bond movie you've ever seen. And I mean that in every way, from the first frame to the last. The movie starts with James Bond just getting his double "0" status and he's raw and hungry. I saw the 1967 version of this movie (David Niven was James Bond-great actor, terrible casting) and it can't hold a candle to this one.

Daniel Craig's Bond is dangerous and 100% male with no apologies or time for political correctness. This guy can act!

Ladies, you'll love this film. You know how almost every Bond movie has at least one nude or partially nude Bond girl? Well, how about a nude Bond? Yeah, baby!

Even if this wasn't a Bond movie, I'd still love it. Terrific action, beautiful scenery, excellent plotting and top-notch acting. My only criticism is that it was about twenty minutes too long.

If I were to rate this movie from a scale of 1 to 10, it would be a 9.

So if you love Bond as much as I do, but thought the only "true" Bond was Sean Connery, you need to give Daniel Craig a try. This guy has got it!

Susan

PS: I highly recommend seeing this movie in a DLP Cinema Theater. Stunning!

I agree, Susanita. Saw it yesterday. I've never been a big Bond fan, but I am now. All the other Bonds looked like they were acting. Craig seems to BE Bond.

The original Woody Allen "Casino Royale" was mere camp, it was making fun of the whole Bond genre. As such, it doesn't really even belong in the Bond pantheon.

I've read all of Ian Fleming, plus anything associated with Fleming, Bond, and the British Secret Service ("A Man Called Intrepid"). In the short story, "The Living Daylights," we find out about one of the two kills that Bond had to complete for his "00" status. A Japanese was working on breaking the British Naval Code in an office of the RCA Building in Manhattan. Bond and another agent rented an office across the street in one of the Rockefeller Center buildings, a couple floors higher. From their vantage, they could look right down into the Japanese decoder's office. The RCA Building has windows with very thick glass, to muffle street noise. The plan was for the other agent to shoot at the window, his shot breaking the glass, and Bond would fire his rifle immediately after. The Japanese was surprised at the window glass breaking and turned to look and Bond shot him through his open mouth. This scenario was based on something that actually occurred in Manhattan during WWII, but before Pearl Harbor and America's entry into the war, but Sir William Stephenson was the second shooter.

Similarly, I believe that "Casino Royale," (the story as originally written) may have been based on actual events that may have occurred before 1940. George Lanzenby, the Australian actor who portrayed Bond in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," did a creditable job, in my opinion, and, although he did make a few humorous remarks, he did not take humor to the extent of Roger Moore, whom I feel is my least favorite Bond. It's surprising when you realize the Albert Broccoli and Harry Salzman approached Moore before they asked Connery. But, Moore had his popular series, "The Saint" and turned them down.

I look forward to seeing the new "Casino Royale," averting my gaze at the proper moment during the "male nudity scenes." Wink

Why? After all your experience with Turkish Baths? I have a feeling you'll really be looking through parted fingers.

Don't look, Joe! It might turn you gay!

Susan, thanks for the review. If my Queen enjoyed it so much, I'm sure I will too. I don't get to go to the movies, but I look forward to its DVD release.

I agree with Susan and Paul. Great flick. I thought the most recent few Bond films were "effects happy" whereas this one just had a good story and excellent acting.

This is maybe sacriledge, but what the hell - BEST BOND EVER.

And I loved Connery. I'd watch him brew tea. But this one was on a different level. THIS Bond is genuinely dangerous. You feel it on a level I never did with the others.

Dare I say it, THIS Bond has some RJ tendencies......

NYJ, you won't be able to turn away, and not in any kind of homophobic way. This is a difficult scene to watch. Every guy in the place will be sick.

Man, Bond is tough.
