finally thoughts on the tomb - scrabby23 - 06-22-2004 first of all "the tomb"?? did i totlaly miss any reference in any shape or form to anything that even resembled a tomb??? :p oh well. i finally read the first RJ book, and this one compared to MY first Rj book (the haunted air) wasnt all that i was expecting. It was a little more of hte stereotypical bad vs. good, innoncent person in danger lets save the day, centuries old curse... dont get me wrong it was a great book just didnt have all the sparks that the haunted air had for me. but i understand its the first book and just tryign to set the stage and characters. I did like the fact that all the people up to vicky died and just like that, no time for a last breath. one chapter nellie was smart mouthing like nelly and the next the rakoshi are holding up pieces of her flesh...oh my! and i loved that kusams "grandmother" was kolabati without the necklace (freakY), it took all the way to the very last chapters to finally figure out what the signifigance of the necklace was. k i am totally looking foward to reading legacies next.... will it acutally have something to do with a "legacy"?? :p thanks FPW for another great read... jack is an awesome character, glad to know a lot more of his orgins.... OOH are we ever gonna see more of KOLABATI????? finally thoughts on the tomb - jimbow8 - 06-22-2004 There are a few references to a 'tomb' in the book, but Paul concedes that it is not a good title for the book and he wanted The Rakoshi (read the FAQ). I think that a lot of the original impact of the ending of the book was lost on you because you already knew that Jack had survived. When it was written, even Paul didn't anticipate more Repairman Jack books so his fate was up in the air. It is still my favorite FPW book and one of my favorite books of all time. But to each his/her own. finally thoughts on the tomb - Ken Valentine - 06-22-2004 scrabby23 Wrote:OOH are we ever gonna see more of KOLABATI????? WHAT! You want us to spoil it for you? You're just going to have to read the rest of the books and find out for yourself. I ain't tellin'. Ken V. finally thoughts on the tomb - XiaoYu - 06-24-2004 Hmm...I'm still in the process of buying the entire Adversary Cycle, so I haven't read anything from them besides The Tomb. And I kinda agree that it is a bit like the typical good vs total evil thing, which I can accept. I still like Legacies and All the Rage a bit better; more realistic is my style. But at least Kusum has a personality and we get to see his side of things, or at least some of it. And even Scarlip isn't the tired old emotionless thing without any kind of personality or loyalty. I haven't read Nightworld, but I accidently found out Kolabati reappears there from a thread here. So I don't think I'm giving anything away besides her continued presence; I haven't read it yet either. finally thoughts on the tomb - jimbow8 - 06-24-2004 XiaoYu Wrote:And I kinda agree that it is a bit like the typical good vs total evil thing, which I can accept. But Paul's twist on it that it isn't good vs evil, it is Total Evil vs not evil. finally thoughts on the tomb - stacyzinda123 - 06-25-2004 jimbow8 Wrote:But Paul's twist on it that it isn't good vs evil, it is Total Evil vs not evil. total evil vs not evil is a good way to look at it, considering some of Jack's methods probably wouldn't be considered "good". I loved the Tomb. It was my second FPW novel and I read it some timea go. I still love it. I enjoy the overt supernatural aspects of the books even more than the slightly more subtle ones of the later books. Also, Gia and Vicky are central to that novel and they are two of my favorite FPW characters out of all his books, which is part of why I enjoyed it so much. I missed them in the later novels. finally thoughts on the tomb - jimbow8 - 06-25-2004 stacyzinda123 Wrote:total evil vs not evil is a good way to look at it, considering some of Jack's methods probably wouldn't be considered "good". It has no good or righteous purpose; its sole purpose is to oppose the other. finally thoughts on the tomb - nonsun blob a - 07-01-2004 XiaoYu Wrote:Hmm...I'm still in the process of buying the entire Adversary Cycle, so I haven't read anything from them besides The Tomb. The thing I like about the series is that it IS good versus evil, but with a great twist on it. Everything's twisted, and not in a goth unaccepted way, it's just different, so I look at it as an epic adventure+ finally thoughts on the tomb - stacyzinda123 - 07-01-2004 jimbow8 Wrote:It is spelled out pretty clearly (in The Keep?) that one of the Powers is Evil and the other is pretty much ambivalent except in its opposition to the Evil Power. Sorry for the mistake. Not all Jack's methods would be considered good, but he's not evil. although, the reader wouldn't know that Jack is part of that grand scheme if all they've read was the Keep and the Tomb. finally thoughts on the tomb - Biggles - 07-01-2004 jimbow8 Wrote:It is spelled out pretty clearly (in The Keep?) that one of the Powers is Evil and the other is pretty much ambivalent except in its opposition to the Evil Power. It has no good or righteous purpose; its sole purpose is to oppose the other. I'm not sure that I agree with that. Paul can clarify this, but my impression of the power that Glaeken serves is that it is neutral as far as "good" v. "evil" in human terms is concerned, but opposed to the imposition of chaotic destruction sought by the minions of the "Otherness". Perhaps the best characterization of the "good guys" in the battle is as "libertarians". Therefore the battle isn't between good and evil, but between the "freedom to choose good v. evil" and "servitude to the forces of chaotic evil". Then again, I could just be full of $hit. |
