I just saw Casablanca for the first time. Aside from some technical difficulties between my DVD player and a fairly scratched up NetFlix disc, I have got to say that this is damn near a perfect movie. Acting, characters, story, photography are all stellar. And Bogey is the man!!!

My favorite his movies are "To have and have not" and "The desperate hours". These are really good(perfect) suspence. About "To have and have not", Lauren Bacoll and Bogey.....what a perfect couple!
The desperate hours is thrilling suspense. This is favorite too,but remake version(performed by Mickey Rooke) was AWFUL.

It bears re-rewatching, esp. for the subtle character shadings. One of Claude Rains's best roles. His "Shocked! SHOCKED!" and "Round up the usual suspects" have become part of the lingo.

The first time?! Mark down the date, because you have not lived until you've seen Casablanca! Certainly at least one of the greatest movies ever, and IMHO perhaps THE greatest (since GWTW and Citizen Kane didn't do much for me, sorry to say).
Ah, the cast! Top to bottom a great assemblage. Bogey, Bergmann, Henried, Rains, Greenstreet, Lorre and even Conrad Veidt as Major Strosser. Claude Rains, as Louis Renault, had some wonderful lines, but one of my favorites was right at the beginning when Bogey gallantly had a slightly inebriated young lady cabbed home rather than taking advantage of her condition. Louis bemoaned the fact that Rick had sent off a beautiful woman because "some day they may be scarce".
For you younger people on the board, my advice is to eschew the colorized version (yecch!) and see the original. Watch it with your significant other after a nice intimate candlelit dinner, while enjoying a nice bottle of wine and a fire (assuming you have a fireplace).

It's definitely a fine movie; wonderfully acted to just the right degree by every principle. Each actor knew whether to overact, tone it down, or do it in layers. And of course, the ending--perfect. It's one of those movies that you just want to go on and on and on, despite knowing that it's perfect as filmed.
Mind you--if you must buy it, get it on DVD, or get the *regular* version on VHS. The "Special" VHS version has a 40 minute documentary before the freaking movie.

I saw Key Largo, We're no angels, and African Queen. But my most favorites are To have and have not and The desperate hours.

He certainly got a large portion of them ... there were so many!
Every time I hear Ilsa's last name though, I have to laugh.
Lund is a city in Sweden.
But Lund means something very different in Hindu.
