Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - fpw - 11-14-2005

Not great, but not bad. I found Depp's Wonka a real creepy critter, more menacing than Wilder's take. Those teeth, that vacant look...

FF= 0 (My grandson watched with me and he doesn't go for FFing -- but I doubt I'd have done much anyway, except maybe in the Oompa-Loompa musical numbers.)

I thought the music was great. They were a tad longer than I'd prefer, and I was a little disapointed with the lyrics. I couldn't tell what they were saying half the time and they really didn't give the clear lessons that they did in the 71 version.

Danny Elfman adapted Roald Dahl's own lyrics.

I had a hard time understanding what they were saying in some of the songs, so I must have missed it.

We liked Charlie, especially the squirrel scene. We didn't buy it, though. We do own Willy Wonka, etc. and Matthew's favorite parts are the Oompa-Loompa songs. There's a sing-a-long version in the special features section...it gets stuck in my head on a regular basis. There's nothing like going through your day with the oompa loompa song on repeat in your brain. Worse than Barney, Dora, Bob the Builder, or even Lazytown. Okay, maybe Oompa-Loompa's not so bad...........

I liked it a lot, but you're right...those teeth.

I think Johnny Depp has a thing for tooth props. He wore them in Ed Wood, Pirates of the Caribean, Secret Window (braces at the end), and Charlie and the Cocolate Factory. I might have missed so too.

The teeth served a purpose, so that Willy's papa would recognize his son later in the film. I thought Wonka's insults were the best of the film. His overall disdain for the kids made me laugh more than it should. I love sarcasm and biting wit.

I liked when he kept saying the Teevee kid mumbled.
