This made me think of what Danielle said way back in Season 1 about her shipmates - that they all got sick and died. Think there's a connection there? I can't remember right now if that's ever been explained, but I don't think it has.

You know, he's nefarious, he's devious, he's clever, he's well-written...but Michael Emerson just doesn't connect to me in a "Wow, what a bad guy!" kind of way. Tom, and Locke's father--now THEY were good villains. Evil, scary, and in Tom's case, more and more interesting, even post-mortem!

I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed with the last episode. I think there was too much time spent on Michael's flashback and not enough Island events.
I guess the reason I was expecting more was because I was thinking of it as a finale - but, of course, it wasn't.
Anyway, it was still good enough - an average Lost episode is still way better than an exciting episode by any other TV show's standards.
What was with Sayid though? Him dropping Michael in it with the captain is not the Sayid behaviour we're used to. Their has to be an ulterior motive there.
Who shot Karl and Danielle and are they dead? Karl - definitely dead. Danielle - not a chance. There's still too much to learn about her. And while I'm on the subject, I don't buy for a second most of what she says. She says she's been on the island for sixteen years but has never discovered any of what the Losties have discovered in a mere few months. Yeah, right. There's a story to tell there and I bet there'll be a lot of Otherness (!) involved.
As to who shot them, my guess is some of Ben's cohorts. I know there was foreshadowing on the freighter of those guys shooting clay pigeons, but I bet that was just to lead us in the wrong direction. My guess is that Karl was shot for real and Danielle was shot with one of those 'Put-You-To-Sleep' darts that got Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley at the end of Season 2.
Anyway, enough rambling for now!

I think Tom was a great villain up until he took his beard off. He was terrific when he snatched Walt off the raft, and just as good when he faced down Jack & Co with his 'invisible line' in the jungle.
But then, when he was smooth-chinned, he just became too.... lovable, like a big happy dog. The dalmation of The Others.

I like Michael Emerson alot and I watched a few interviews with him on YouTube and the man just seems like an all around nice guy adn appears to be quite an actor to boot. I can't honestly think of another actor out there that could pull Ben off the way he does.

And speaking of Tom this has been driving me nuts for sometime (well since I watched the last episode on Saturday that is). I thought Tom was shot by Sayid (or one of the other Losties) back on the beach after the failed "kill them all" thing from Ben on teh walkie-talkie from the radio tower...remember when Hurley busted through the woods with the van...that episode.

So how the hell is Tom alive again and back on the mainland manipulting Michael to work for Ben?? So far the only character that seems to be immortal (for lack of a better word) is Mikhail...so WTF, over?

Or do I have my characters twisted back and forth and am thinking of a different Other getting shot on the beach?

Yes, he was shot on the beach - but by Sawyer. But remember that the Michael flashback would have taken place before the events on the island shown during the season three finale.

Ahh...that's right. I was trying to get the timeline straight, but couldn't get it down. Now that you said that it is becoming clearer. Thanks!!

You ask great questions. I've been wondering about that since Season 1. I've always wanted to see a flashback on Danielle so that we'd know exactly what happened with her shipmates. But how can we see that now? Sad However, being dead or mortally wounded has never kept characters from reappearing on LOST, so I still hold out some minor hope of a Danielle flashback.

Yes, Sawyer shot Tom Friendly. Sayid snapped another guy's neck with his legs. Here's the video so you can watch it over and over (like I do, because it's so awesome).

Didn't Daniel Faraday explicitly state that the "sickness" was caused by extensive exposure to electromagnetic (or nuclear??) radiation?

I'm pretty sure he said they thought the "side effects" could be related to excessive exposure to electromagnetic or some other radiation. But he didn't state it as a matter of fact, more as a theory because it's not been proven. Faraday et al don't seem to know exactly how the Island works with radiation to cause those side effects. At least, they haven't shared that knowledge, if they have it, with the audience.
