***SPOILER ALERT***

I haven't watched many of the episodes, but I caught last night's. Someone at work predicted that soon we will see a penguin on the island - I thought that was pretty funny. I was a little disappointed that they added an element of supernatural which takes away from the reality of the show. But again, I haven't seen very many of the episodes, so maybe it fits if you watch it regularly.

Question: I know the "polar bear" has been seen before in one of the earlier episodes. Did Walt also look at the comic book in that episode?

I didn't think last night's episode was as good, but for different reasons. I don't mind the kid being "different" because things are already super weird on the island--Jack's "dad" lurking around, the giant invisible creature, the plane-thing under the ground, the psycho French woman, Claire's run-in with the Aussie psychic, etc. I just thought the backstory of Michael was boring until the very end. However, the last 15 minutes of the episode was really good.

It was different when the Island did weird things. Now that the weirdness is portable and may have been brought to the island with Walt, it has the potential for screwing everything up. I still find the show very entertaining, but the legacy of the show will totally depend on the resolution. If they have a cop-out ending (like Dallas) or a weak ending (like Seinfeld) it can ruin the show for any future viewers. If there is no resolution (like Cheers) it can just make you wonder.

I just hope they don't screw it up.... it's a knife's edge and now their leaning toward botching it.

I didn't see it as Walt bringing weirdness to the island, just as there being something weird about Walt. Claire had the thing with the psychic so there has already been "supernatural" stuff going on with characters before they got to the island. I honestly think you guys might be reading too much into this.

I read somewhere earlier this week (TV Guide?) that someone viewers are "invested" in will die before the end of the season.

Taking bets now...

Seeing how its someone "invested" in, my pick is Jack or Kate because thei the two central characters, not Charlie because he's already had a brush with death, and he brings in fans, Sawyer is too interesting of a character to waste, and Locke is just to cool. Other than that, maybe Boone or Claire.

Personally I think they could do away with Shannon and it wouldn't bother me a bit. I've been reading the ABC LOST Forums and those guys come up with some WILD theories!

I just don't want to see Walt as having supernatural powers that he somehow learn to control and just whisk everyone off the island. If it was just painted as coincidence (Walt is not Jack), then the weirdness could be brushed aside. But, they made too much of a point of him being different and it could just cripple the whole ending.

It's not that we're reading too much into it, but there are some who are thrilled with the series and don't want the writers to screw it up.

I guess I don't understand what you're saying here. The only mention of his weirdness was the bird running into the window and then his adopted dad saying he was "different" and that "things happen" sometimes when he's around (implying when he's upset). I didn't see any evidence that he has "powers" that could "whisk everyone off the island." Unless you're talking about the part where Locke taught him how to throw the knife into the tree?? Nothing truly supernatural there, I don't think.

I think if they were going to focus the whole show around the kid's (so far not in evidence) supernatural powers, we'd know it by now. From what I've read they outlined the whole first season before they even started filming it so I doubt it's going to diverge from its Backstory of the Week format.

It's all a matter of the setup. With Walt, they've established that he's different and that he can make things happen. If he is gifted with some sort of telepathic power and can make a polar bear show up to terrorize him because he read it in a comic book, the writers could venture down a path toward the resolution of the whole story that would be very unsatisfying. If the Island is the source of the weirdness, it's one thing. If it's Walt, then that is a weakness of the whole story.

I don't anticipate the format of the show changing. I also don't anticipate the show starting to suck and become a chore to watch. I truly love the show and think that the acting and writing is top-notch and well beyond the rest of the TV wasteland. I'm just afraid that they may rely on Walt's differentness, and we may all be set up for a huge disappointment when the ending comes.

I think it's more a question of what and who is real on the island, and who and what is NOT. The kid pictured the knife hitting the mark on the tree and it became real. He also pictured the polar bear twice and it became real twice. But this phenomena is happening to everyone on the island, so far. Each week a different character gets the flashback treatment and what they fear or desire becomes "real," but selectively so, as if there were someone or something trying to learn about these survivors through their thoughts. The "black rock" mystery now needs to be scrutinized as it may be the "thing" that makes their thoughts real. Did anyone notice how com-gen the bear looked? And notice how the boars have disappeared when Locke stopped hunting them? I think the kid is just part of the puzzle. And I'll throw it out now: Locke is not real. The real Locke cannot walk. But, like the polar bear, he is real enough to cause damage or communicate for whatever is behind each phenomenon. We've yet to see the real "thought maker" and the kid alone is not it. BTW, was the pregnant girl still carrying the baby when she made her appearance at the end? She didn't look pregnant to me, but my galfriend says the camera angle didn't really show whether or not she was.
