I got a copy of Elgar's Second Symphony by chance, gave it a spin. Wasn't really listening, though, as I was reading while it was playing. But when I'd turn a page, and turn my ears to the sound pouring from my boom-box, I thought, "Dear me... this is movie soundtrack music, only Elmer Bernstein did it better."

But me own favorite =real= soundtrack music?

Gotta be A HARD DAY'S NIGHT or MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR by The Fabs. Later for violins and cellos! Gimme 2 electric guitars, bass and drums! ("Lindner, there were =plenty= of violins and cellos in MMT!" Ah...details, details, details..."Wink )

I haven't bought a movie soundtrack in years, but "back in the day", I bought a few. The best of the bunch back then, IMHO and in no particular order, were: "Shaft", "Super Fly", "The Graduate". Probably a few others, but these I know I bought, on LPs. My wife has the "Mr. Holland's Opus" soundtrack, which she plays regularly, and I've also heard the "Forrest Gump" soundtrack. Both of these merit consideration.

Here's mine
BATTLE OF THE BULGE B. Frankel I picked up the cd from Japan of the original soundtrack-great use of "Panzerleid".
HERCULES Enzo Masetti The music from the Steve Reeves film is a joy to hear.
THE OMEGA MAN Ron Grainer Boy I love this score-I grabbed it up before it dropped out of the bin!
JAMES BERNARD scores
TOWERING INFERNO John Williams
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Franz Waxman
JOURNEY TO THE STARS John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra
from Philips Track this down as it has what has to be the best version of "Things To Come" from Sir Arthur Bliss. This wonderful version not only includes chorus but the Christmass carols that are part of the films start. Wonderful!!!
DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS/12 O'CLOCK HIGH Alfred Newman
JOE VS THE VOLCANO George Delerue

Now does anyone have a copy of "THE ENEMY BELOW" by Leith Harline? I missed the boat!!!!!

I've never really been all that big on soundtracks, unless I couldn't figure out where to get the actual music from the movie that I liked.

With Pulp Fiction, I went out and got the Dick Dale CD, "Better Shred than Dead," which had some great music on it (and some not so great), but it certainly had Miserlou (the Dick Dale song from Pulp Fiction).

Once I did own the soundtrack from American Graffiti.

I also have the sountracks to Dead Man, Vampires, and Desperado -- not because they are great soundtracks, but because there was a song somewhere in the soundtrack that I just had to have.

I have The Phantom of the Opera on cassette tape. Does that count as a soudtrack? I love it.

I don't generally buy soundtrack CD's as a rule because I like to relate the music in films with the scenes they feature in. For the same reason I'm not a great lover of musicals as in a lot of cases they are just a collection of songs with a poorly connected storyline.
Having said all that there is one film that I really related to in my youth and on a whim, purposely set out to track down the soundtrack CD almost 30 years later. The film was 'Melody' and the soundtrack was by the Bee Gees and a track by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
There, I've done it, I've come clean and owned up to a guilty pleasure.

On a completely different note, There's a song that plays over the final credits of 'Devil's Own' (Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt) that really struck a chord with me. The rest of the score wasn't so memorable but Melissa Etheridge's 'Going Home' is one of those songs that has that 'haunting' quality that every time I hear it I can't get it out of my head for days. Even now, I can hear it in the back of my head.
