They make references to Mudd? Tribbles too? I haven't seen it since I was camping. I plan to see the movie this week. I might see it during the week but not tell the boyfriend so I can see it a second time later.

I thought it was an excellent film. There were many nods to past Trek canon and the like. Abrams has added his vision to the new time line of Trek future. It will be interesting to see where the next movies goes.
[SPOILER]I like that this Spock gets mad. Also Spock's nerve pinch to Khan was delivered with true malice. But his yelling Khan's name seemed cheesey. The Spock and Kirk reverses were all through the movie, but you could see how they still were friends beyond anything else. Also, when Kirk told Chekov to put on a red shirt, his face was priceless. LOL Best scene for me had to be when the Enterprise was rising through the clouds, it brought an almost tear to my eye.
Nods to McCoy's jokes, Scotty's as well. Too much Uhura and Marcus for my liking, but skin sells.

[spoiler]So basically Abrams decided to rely on Orci and Kurtzman for his trek "canon" and decided to throw as much TOS stuff in as possible. Oh lets have a dead tribble (did it eat too much poisoned grain?) so we can test Khan's blood. Lets throw in tribbles, Mudd, sound effects, red shirt jokes, Gorn, the BB, Section 31 (DS9), Qo'nos, etc. so people don't notice that all we did was rehash TWOK and reverse some roles. Abrams is a fucking joke.[/spoiler]
Brian, and of course Spock would get mad. He's half human. He's gotten mad in the past, in the TOS series. He's also shown emotions such as sorrow when he thought he had killed Kirk for example. How is Spock getting mad a surprise or something unique to JJTrek?

I liked it much better than any ST before Abrams (and I even like it more than Abrams first ST movie). Still, it's what I call a popcorn flick.
ETA: A very minor spoiler now hid (I heard who the villain was before I went but I don't know if others have):

I think I'm looking forward to Abrams' take on Star Wars in 2015. As for this movie...
[spoiler]I could've done without the last 30 minutes or so. The movie was doing an excellent job of exploring and subverting the themes in Wrath of Khan while having a battle for the soul of Starfleet. Admiral Marcus is right. It's a scary goddamn universe out there and the Federation needs to be ready for it. Kirk is also write in that the Federation needs to face that future as explorers instead of soldiers.
However, that got junked to play out a rushed, half-assed version of The Wrath of Khan. The reason that Wrath of Khan worked was the relationship that was established between the characters some 15 years previous. On that occasion, Kirk and Khan parted on relatively friendly terms. Then disaster strikes Khan's planet. You can imagine him hoping desperately for Kirk to come and help save his people. Over time that hope turns to wrath as it is betrayed.
Here, though, Khan's betrayal of Kirk makes no real sense. This Khan has no personal animosity toward Kirk or the Enterprise. The only reason for Khan to do what he does towards the end of Into Darkness is to provide some silly-ass final boss battle and a dramatic moment for somebody to tell "Khannnnnnnnn!"

We just came back from seeing Into Darkness and I loved it. Couple parts were cheesy and some parts made me laugh my ass off. Zachary Quinto is just so perfect for Spock. More so than any other character I think.

[spoiler]I saw a reason for Khan attacking Kirk & the Enterprise: He was betrayed by Kirk (remember stunning him on the bridge?) even after having saved his life repeatedly while they were working together. That's certainly not going to go over well with ANYONE, let alone an egotistical bigot and former dictator and sociopath like himself who holds people like Kirk as inferior. Oh, and Kirk repeatedly telling him that he would pay wouldn't help either (though I got the impression Khan didn't take the beating he got during his arrest personally, as if it would be beneath him to admit to being hurt or powerless before an inferior being like Kirk).
Granted, Abrams was definitely trying a tribute to the original arc, and it did get especially cheesy...but that was part of the fun for me.[/spoiler]
And Star Trek is junk food for the mind. Before Abrams it was myth & fable with a scifi paint job and never was realistic in biology, socially (which I consider as absurdly unrealistic as the "evil Mirror Universe"), or technologically (by this I mean if they really had that tech then society would've been so radically different that real life wouldn't have gone anything like the show, or even how the Abrams movie did). Abrams has finally made Star Trek true scifi to me rather than myth & fable, but it's still just a popcorn flick. And that's ok, because sometimes nothing satisfies like a twinkie.

This. But that’s what most people want, a rehash of old stuff, that way it gives you the familiar that you already know and love but with a new, read often cheap, twist to make it seem fresh and exciting.
I’ve already stated my hatred for Abrams and the bullshit new trek, but part of that is because it’s just redoing what’s already been done. Even the worst of Trek, Enterprise for me, was made watchable because despite it’s, in my opinion crappy characters and mostly crappy stories, it was trying to do something new, not just rehashing the same old stuff.
If Abrams was the truly creative and innovative genius people seem to think he is, he would have taken a beloved franchise and done something new, taken it in a new direction. Instead he waited just long enough for some of the paths to get overgrown and then proceeded to go down that same path 40 some years later.
