There are some great short stories. But the one that has stayed with me has been Soft. Brilliant.

Just thought of another one. "Please Don't Hurt Me" from the LITTLE BEIGE BOOK. It's a very short story but it packs a punch. There is one sentence on the last page that absolutely and completely grosses me out. Yuck! But fabulous as only FPW can be.

I've done readings of "PDHM" a number of times, most recently at WHC. It's perfect for a reading because it's all dialogue. I've found if I pause in certain places with a certain facial expression, I never fail to get a laugh -- albeit a hesitant one.

Not to mention its brevity. It has got to be easier reading it than "Midnight Mass."
I must mention the spider story written with your daughter as being another fave. Spider sacs are just about the creepiest thing out there.

Hey, when did you do the reading at WHC? You said you were scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but when I returned on Saturday afternoon, there was no FPW on the menu! (*sniff*)
I went by the schedule you posted here, not the official schedule. Guess that was my mistake.

ROFL! Paul, you are never gonna let me forget that, are you? LOL!
I'm holding on to the second copy of "Little Beige" and will give it to a friend, who does not yet exist, whom I turn on to FPW and who becomes an insane fan. There's someone who could fit that bill, a lovely pregnant doctor with whom I work to whom I gave "The Barrens and Others" as a pregnancy gift. Certainly it's not for the baby, but I thought a book of FPW short stories is oddly suitable for a women who is going to give birth any minute, who doesn't have a lot of time, who is suffering from "pregnancy brain" and can't focus on anything for very long. She was excited to get it. We'll see....
Do you know that awful sentence in PDHM that I mentioned earlier? Could you figure which it was? Ye gads, that never fails to get me. Yewww!!

As I read and re-read them, the list changes. Right now I'd have to say "Faces" is my favorite. There is such humanity and tenderness in that story, which is really wild when you consider that Paul provokes these genuinely warm and fuzzy feelings for a heinous serial killer.
I'll come up with more.
