Glaeken and Jack - Bluesman Mike Lindner - 10-24-2004

Ken Valentine Wrote:I read the book at least a half dozen times, and it just . . . never . . . dawned.

The Nagasaki Vector is one of the funniest books I have ever read. But it will make more sense if you read The Probability Broach first.

In TPB, a Denver homicide detective -- while investigating the murder of a physicist -- is transported into a parallel universe where Congress hasn't met for thirty years, there is very little crime, no taxes, and everybody carries a gun. It's the first book in the North American Confederacy series.

(TPB won the Prometheus Award for 1982. FPW won it in 1979 for Wheels Within Wheels, and again this year for Sims. FPW's GATEWAYS is a contender for next years award.)

In TNV, the Skipper of a time machine has his craft hijacked, and he and his three little alien buddies find themselves marooned in the NAC and go to the detective from the previous book for help.

Thanks again. Sounds like fun reading.

By the way, I live in Manhattan and I'm in the B&N at Lincoln Center all the time. Isn't that where you work?

Yes, indeed! I'm easily caught on the sales floor Fri-Sun 9AM til 3PM. Stop by! Ask for Bluesman Mike on the 3rd floor.

I was just at the store, but around 7pm or so (today is Sunday). I will definitely ask for you, Mike!

Just scout around for a long-legged desperado of desperate mien, 6'2", moustached and goateed, dressed in black. I'm =usually= the only one on the 3rd floor like that. Wink

In the last chapter of Reprisal FPW is telling the story of Lisl driving herself home and then he jumps to a paragraph about Gleaken and how he likes Jack because jack is a warrior. No where else in the book is jack mentioned. After this short paragraph FPW jumps back to Lisl but she has arrived home. Did anyone else notice this?...I have not read Nightworld though I am starting it tonight so this might be explained in there.

Is there really a mistake in the book?

See chapter 30...about 8 paragraphs in...

Yes, it is a mistake in the printing. Seems that FPW wrote Reborn, Reprisal, and Nightworld as one. When they were seperated into three novels that goof accidently was put into the wrong novel. Pretty much a computer error as I understand it.

And welcome to the board!

I can imagine. The Tomb ends with a cliff-hanger, and it was quite a while before Nightworld was published. FPW, the fink, left us dangling for quite some time. Big Grin

True. There's nothing like the first time.
