My Joker…their Joker - Brian - 01-13-2009

I read Definitive Therapy the other night, and thank you sir for posting it here.
Yes, I can see your Joker now in Ledger's performance. Spooky indeed.

Hello, Mr. Wilson

I will admit that I have just become familiar with your name and do not know your work. I'm sure you can guess how I heard of you. I read the article posted at the io9 website describing the similarities between Ledger's Joker and the way you used the character. I thought your response was quite tasteful as well as your website's comment (about removing the story) to which I am replying. Anyway, I am interested in reading your story and was wondering how I can get a copy. I have not yet taken the time to peruse your site so the answer to my question may be self-evident, but I wanted to write regardless.

Ciao, A

I'll leave the story up: [SIZE=3]http://www.repairmanjack.com/support files/JOKER-set.rtf.

It's also available in the collection The Barrens & Others as well as the long-oop The Further Adventures of the Joker.

I brought my copy of The Further Adventures of the Joker to this past year's NECon, to be signed by the Legend himself, and incidentally - on the same damn day that The Dark Knight was coming out. Too bad. Oh well, there's always this year.

One of your best stories. Thank you for the free download. Though, it is better to read it in the book than off the computer.

I'm sure FPW isn't the first or only writer to embellish on another character in a different light than the original-
"Definitive Therapy"is one of my favorite FPW stories. It spooked me. It made me look over my shoulder. It was disturbing on a very deep level and I loved the hell out of it.
I'm sure I'm not the only person who saw that same brilliant evil in the latest portrayal of the Joker and compared it to the story. To deny the ability to do this would be like shutting up every conversation comparing JL to HL's performances. THIS is the Joker I want to see, this is the Joker who makes my skin crawl and I don't think anyone stole anything from anyone.

I just cannot help myself, but everytime I read any lines from the "Joker", I always hear Jack Nicolsons voice reading the lines! His voice is so distinct, like Sean Connerys voice, it's just too hard not to do it! Would have loved to see Jack do this little vignette instead of dying in the first "Batman" back in the 1980's! (has it been that long?) GOD, I'm OLD! :-(

Nicholson's Joker was one of my favorite screen performances of all time. I also loved Bill "The Butcher", in Gangs of New York (Daniel Day-Lewis), The Terminator (Arnold), and Taxi Driver (DeNiro).

I see the similarities between Paul's joker and HL's joker. Both did something to me that no other 'Joker' had done - they actually scared me.

I see why folks think they're the similar, and why 'some folks' think Paul should 'do something' about that.

And I completely understand why he can't, and wouldn't, even if he could.

And I laud him for that entire attitude. And for attempting to make *both* reasons known and obvious to anyone.

Paul, you've been a complete gentleman about this whole thing, and I, for one, applaud you for how you're handled it, even if it didn't work out exactly as hoped.

Cool thread...FPW's Joker story was, believe it or not,the FIRST FPW story I ever read. I was a Batman fan long before I ever discovered our favorite Repairman, and after reading The Tomb and went back and reread The Further Adventures of The Joker and made the connection. As for Ledger or the screenwriters being inspired by the story,I say its absolutely possible. I read where they based their version of The Joker on a lot of different comics, and I'm sure someone somewhere had a copy of that Joker book and scoured it for inspiration. I seem to recall that same book had a Joker story by Joe Lansdale and another really good, really sick story called On the Wire. The authors name escapes me at the moment, but it was all about The Joker calling some anonymous 900 party line and trying to talk the girl on the other end of the phone into commiting suicide. I wish DC would reprint those stories...I know a lot of fans would like to reread them(mine are buried in storage somewhere at the moment...I hate being stuck in an apt.Sad)
