Serenity Review - No Spoilers - Jay #1 - 09-28-2005 neither did I... until the movie was announced. but the few I've seen on sci-fi are excellent. fpw Wrote:I've never seen "Firefly." Will that matter in regard to Serenity? Serenity Review - No Spoilers - Paige - 09-28-2005 Oh you guys, where were you when they were showing it on Fox back in the old days. They cancelled it because it had low ratings. But the movie was specifically made that you don't need to see the show at all to watch it. Saying it was cancelled because of low ratings is like justifying invading a country for WMDs. It's all BS. Fox has been using an excuse like "low ratings" for years to kill off shows. All the networks do it to some degree. But, Firefly was nixed because Fox didn't know what to do with the show. It was a genre-hopping series that couldn't quite be nailed down. Is it sci-fi? Is it a western? Is it drama? Comedy? It had too many aspects to it that made it difficult for narrow-minded TV execs to define the show. I was there each week and was pissed as hell when it was cancelled. I bought the DVDs as soon as they were available. Now, I'm going to see the movie Friday night. They stuck it in the Friday night death slot. Just like ABC killed Miracles. Another fine show that could really use a revival. The thing is, if Firefly was met with the same love and approval from the fans as say even the crapy OC, Firefly would probably still be on. The channel doesn't really care what it shows, as long as people watch the commercials that they cram in the middle. It's all a business anyway. Serenity Review - No Spoilers - BrettM - 09-29-2005 The Rotten Tomatoes tomatometer is currently at 73% (fresh) based on 11 reviews. One day to go! I tend to agree, but Firefly had better ratings than the first season of Buffy. I think if it had been a mid-season show, like Buffy, it would have fared better. At the risk of offending some people, I cared not a whit for Buffy or Angel, and when I heard about Whedon and Firefly in '02, I thought, "Buffy in space? No Way." So maybe that contributed to low ratings, but I tend to think Fox mismanaged the show because they had different opinions of what would work - witness how they changed the pilot, moved the show around, failed to support a new program. Serenity Review - No Spoilers - Marc - 09-29-2005 There's a great review on CineCast (a Pod-cast) of Serenity. Check it out here: CineCast Show Serenity Review - No Spoilers - Mick C. - 09-30-2005 Okay, I watched the entire run of Firefly episodes this week. I am so stoked for the movie tomorrow. |
