Kolchak, The Nightstalker - Terry Willacker - 10-04-2005

I saw it. So far, Night Stalker and Ghost Whisperer are my two favorite new shows.

Are you saying he looks like a zygote?

I imagine you meant Reprisal, but I couldn't resist.

ROFL! Yes, he has that neither male nor female look of a zygote.

Indeed, I meant "Reprisal," and I know, Scott, that you will never be able to resist a well-placed, well-deserved zing. Wink

Kolchak, The Nightstalker - Mick C. - 10-04-2005

They just released (finally) the original KOLCHAK series as a DVD set. I had to order it. No extras, but it will be nice to have the full set. I already have the 2 pilots (NIGHT STALKER/NIGHT STRANGLER) on DVD.

I haven't seen the remake, but the pleasure of watching the original was McGavin's great acting and Kolchak's character. Seedy, down at the heels, hanging out in morgues and police stations, you would learn a lot more about real journalism from Carl Kolchak than you would from Carl Bernstein.

Plus, Carl was a coward at heart who still did what he had to do - perhaps the best example of bravery in a TV character. I remember an episode where he hid in a monster's closet when the monster (Jack the Ripper) came home. Jack started sorting through his clothes in the closet, getting closer and closer to where Carl is cowering in the corner...until Carl suddenly has a panic attack, screams, and runs out of the closet yelling. Classic scene, I don't think many action heroes would do the same thing, but most of us would.

I agree. Look at him!

Darren McGavin had a cameo...he was just hanging around the newsroom in the vicinity of the 2 leads. He had no lines, he just was there wearing his standard old "Kolchak" costume and holding that ratty hat. Cute.

BTW, Stuart Townsend would make a good "Reborn" era Rasalom.

I watched this, but was giving it some time to process before reviewing it.

All in all it shows promise and the Darren McGavin thing was cool.

Minor spoilers.....................................

One thing I must say I didn't like was that it looks like its going to have the big conspiracy, everything is connected plot lines like the Xfiles later episodes had. The thing I liked so much about the original was A: The episodes were stand alone and would be wrapped up at the end of every episode with a dialogue on what was found. B: Some of the better monster's on TV then or now.

This first episode gave zero explanation on what the monsters were, and had the FBI agent who was trying to cover everything up so he could get Kolchak for the murder of his wife.

When I first saw he had been a suspect in a murder I was kind of excited thinking they had carried that over from the original first made for TV movie where Kolchak kills the Vampire and the authorities threaten him with a murder charge if he doesn't keep it quite and move along...but they went a different route which I am still open to if they don't over do the conspiracy thing.

I have high hopes and my fingers crossed for this show as I was a big fan of the original.

I forgot to watch the new show last week? Can I jump in without seeing the first episode (or the old show)?

When is it on again??

Yeah you should be able to, think it shouldn't matter that much.

It is on opposite the Cop Show for Dummies...The original CSI I believe, so that is Thursday if I am not mistaken.

Thursdays 9/8C on ABC.

I liked the show. It had some good suspense. I'll definitely watch it again this week.
