"Serenity"/Firefly News updates - Ken Valentine - 01-09-2005

I think that they mentioned that they were speaking Chinese at some point in the series, which makes sense given the population.

Population?

The "Alliance" was supposedly between the U.S. and China. They came together in order to dominate the galaxy, or the 'Verse as it's called in the show. So everybody speaks both English and Chinese.

Disc four has three episodes; The Message, Heart of Gold, and Objects in Space, followed by deleted scenes, a few interviews, and some more background on the program.

Without knowing anything about a Chinese connection, I was aware of a very Eurasian look about the cast, and I wondered about it. River looks decidedly Eurasian. Kaylee also has a bit of an Asian look about her, as does Zoe. The mix of Asian look is more predominant among the women. In fact, I don't see anything like it among the men.

As an aside, I think Eurasians are among the most beautiful people on the planet. The late Brandon Lee, for instance, was one of the most handsome actors I've ever laid eyes on. Or to assuage Biggles and to be absolutely correct in my usage, he was one of the most handsome actors on whom I ever laid eyes.

I didn't know anything about the Anglo-Sino Alliance. Do they mention that in the show or is it part of Whedon's background story? They never really got into what the Alliance was or why it was so bad (at least that I remember), other than they are just the government (sort of like the Empire in Star Wars).

By population I just meant that since China has such a large population, I gathered that they would have some power among the alliance and also be one of the main languages.

All this talk about the great show Firefly and I missed it. Oh well. Excellent show. I'm excitted about the movie.

The show was great, the only problem was the way the ended it, or better yet, were unable to end it. Makes me kinda sad. I got the set, watched it once, and couldn't watch it again because of the way it ended. It just left me with an empty feeling that kills me. Hopefully the movie will fill that void.

I'm watching the 2nd disc of "Firefly," and I'm loving it. The dialogue is hysterical.

In "Our Mrs. Reynolds:"

Mal to his supposed new bride: "You have the right, same as anyone, to live and try to kill people."

Mal, to his crew, trying to explain his supposed new bride: "She's NOT my wife. I don't even know her."

Jayne responds: "Well, then...uh... can I know her?"

The Shepherd to Mal: "If you take sexual advantage of her, you will burn in a special level of hell. A place they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."

It's not only the dialogue that's great, but the direction as well. For instance, Kaylee is trying to comfort the new bride, and from off screen comes Jayne's hand, just his hand, clumsily looking as if he is trying to comfort the girl but really just wanting to touch her. Subtle and funny stuff!

If you watch closely, Jayne's always touching things.

Jayne: "You got a WIFE?! All I got was this crappy stick sounds like it's rainin'!"

Mal: "I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you!"

Mal: "She has a name you know."
Jayne: "So does this! I call it... (reverently) Vera."

Wash: "No, we're all just laughing hysterically, and giving each other significant glances."

Wash: "Everybody NOT talking about sex... in here. Everybody else... ELSEWHERE!"

Mal: "But she was NAKED! And all... all... ARTICULATE!"

Mal to Inara: "I KNEW you let her kiss you."

What about Badger's line in SHINDIG? The one about... "invites."

I'm glad you're enjoying it.

"Our Mrs. Reynolds" is my favorite so far. There are so many great lines and double takes and looks, by every member of the cast. I am becoming increasing fond of Kaylee, too, as a character and the actress in her performance.

I've been waiting with baited breath for the return of (*gulp*) the Reevers (Rievers? Reavers?). Gadzooks! Talk about the bogeyman. Gives me nightmares just to think of their description, and I haven't even seen one yet, except for the glimpse of the stowaway in "Bushwacked" who "reconstructs" himself to look like a Reever. Yewww!

Yes, the character Kaylee is a sweetheart. She has an earthiness combined with a charming innocence.

Christina Hendricks sure does a wonderful job as Saffron, doesn't she? Wait 'til she returns in the episode TRASH!

It's an altogether wonderful cast. Including the guest stars.

"Men gone savage on the edge of space." Chilling!

(They spell it Reavers, but there was a 1969 movie called "The Reivers," starring Steve McQueen -- it was a comedy/drama.)

You know... I've tried... but I really can't pick out a favorite episode. There's something in each of them that appeals to me.
