That looks awesome! An incredible cast and what sounds like an old-timey soundtrack. Very cool.
I never much cared for John Wayne so I never have seen the original in its entirety. This is one remake I'm very happy to see made.

anyone else see it yet? I saw it when I was up in Chicago and thought it was excellent. I still like the oirginal just a tad bit better, but there was very little to not like in the new version.
And the shootouts and other "violent" scenes were awesome!! (Sorry...I am a guy! LOL)

Bridges nailed Rooster. Damon, as the Texas Ranger was a far better character than Glen Campbell. The key scenes were far better than in the 69 version (even the 1 against 4 shootout). The acting was better and the film looked better than any Western I can think of.
And the shootouts and other "violent" scenes were awesome!! (Sorry...I am a guy! LOL)
The Coens really knocked this one out of thed park. I'm going to see it again, while it's still in theaters.

So it wasn't quit as good as the original? "True Grit" has always been in my top ten westerns. I was never a big fan of John Wayne but "Rooster Cogburn" was such an interesting character and the overall story makes it a classic in my eyes. It'll be awhile until I see this, but I'm looking forward to Jeff Bridges portrayal of Rooster.

I have to lean toward Wayne's portrayal of Rooster, though Bridges was excellent, but the new girl (forgive me for forgetting her name) really nailed Hattie. The dialogue was much truer to the book in the new version, and I loved it. ("a congress of louts"..."you sure don't varnish yer words"...etc.)

You got that right. He was hard to understand. Reminded me of Hank's neighbor on King of the Hill. It was a great movie though, I saw it in sort of an art house theater, one likely to have a Coen Brothers marathon.. the movie, according to the theater owner, ended the way the book did, and the John Wayne version ended differently...
Damon and Bridges were nearly unrecognizeable in thier roles, and I'm glad Matt Damon was able to break further away from Nu Perfect Hollywood and play roles that actually resemble real people, as bizarre as some of those real people the Marshall encountered along the way might be.
Hattie terrrorizing the livery shop owner was hilarious, in and of itself. In the end I think the True Grit was hers and the horse she rode in on, so to speak. It was Hailee Steinfeld, according to IMDB.

I just rewatched the original. It took place in a brighter, cleaner, neater West, and what a difference a score makes: Elmer Bernstein's (I didn't have to look it up -- his style is unmistakable) was bouncy and airy while the remake's was more low key. Kim Darby wasn't as appealing as Hailee Steinfeld, but I think Steinfeld had a better script and direction.

I like how casually hardened by frontier life Hattie was. Killings didn't seem to faze her, she accepted them as a part of that life, and Hailee portrayed that really well....
