Inception - The Mad American - 07-21-2010

Hmm, okay. I haven't watched Shutter Island yet because I figured out the "surprise" twist ending from the advertising campaign before it hit theaters. Still want to see Inception though.

I think this is one of the most challenging and intelligent films I've seen in a long, long time. You MUST pay attention. And I recommend theater viewing. A couple of inconsistencies niggled me, but they might not be inconsistencies at all. I've already explained them to myself, though not to my complete satisfaction.

why all the comparison to Shutter Island? Just because Leo is in both movies?

The character he plays in both movies have very similar problems in the wife department. Saying anymore would be considered spoilers. But, as you've noted, some folk have already noted the similarities.

Here's a very interesting take on the film. Do not read this before you see it -- loaded with spoilers that will ruin the film for you. You need to walk into the theater knowing as little as possible and let the film take you on its ride.

While not perfect- I definitely think it's among the best action films of the last decade.

It could have used more emotional depth- a better exploration of Cobb/Mal/his motivations (and limitations) etc...

That said, I haven't had a better time watching a movie in years and I'll definitely be going back for "the IMAX experience".

As for the Shutter Island comparison- the stories and character are very similar, but this exceeds that triumph of mediocrity in every way possible. It's funny, because watching Shutter Island, I kept thinking to myself how much the score sounded like a score from a Christopher Nolan movie. Is Scorsese trying to reinvent himself...as Christopher Nolan...pre-emptively?

I hope there's not a sequel. It stands very well on its own.

I agree that it's one of the most complex and intelligent movies in recent years. Given the state of most Hollywood features, one can debate how difficult that would be, but INCEPTION is more than just better. It's actually well done and smart.

Wow, really like that theory. Was sort of thinking along the lines as the first part, but the movie to dream correlation puts it in a whole different perspective.

Mind blown again....

The biggest thing that got me in the whole movie was how it seemed that Cobb's father, or father in law, saw Cobb's kid's regularly as he was going to give him gifts to give to the kid's. Yet he tought in Paris?

That bothered me too: No one spoke French in Paris. But if it were all a dream within a dream ad infinitum, then the whole espionage thing seems like a waste of time, my time as a movie-goer, that is. Let's hope Paul doesn't get any ideas about how Nightworld will now end.

That's why I really like that theory above, It explains why it really isn't a waste of time or a cop out if it is all a dream. It also sort of gives you the explanation why it isn't a waste in the movie as well with the marks reaction once he gets inside the vault.
