1408 - beowulf - 10-18-2007 I have to admit i was not a fan of the movie. Ths was more of a Cusack one man show (though I preferred him in "Better Off Dead"). It was not much of a horror movie and they gave us very, VERY little explanantion. I'm not one of those movie goers who needs everything handed to them, but a little background would have been nice. I know this is the "Stephen King" way, but I think this was another example of a great story not translating well onto film. 1408 - Tony H - 10-18-2007 beowulf Wrote:I have to admit i was not a fan of the movie. I saw this in the theater months ago and thought I was in for a real treat. All I got was a good jump-scare and somewhat atmospheric chills. It didn't hold up at all for me and I found it rather boring after the novelty of a haunted room wore off. 1408 - GeraldRice - 10-19-2007 I was underwhelmed. Glad I didn't see it in a theater. 1408 - beowulf - 10-19-2007 It has a been a long time since I have seen a REALLY good supernatural horror movie. 1408 - Tony H - 10-21-2007 beowulf Wrote:It has a been a long time since I have seen a REALLY good supernatural horror movie. Supernatural is hard to do. Not much you can do with the genre that has not been done already. More recent Supernatural films just don't follow through with. They start off well enough then fall apart at the end. J-Horror opened a lot of possibility but there are only so many variations on scary kids with long hair covering half of heir face. The Messengers was fairly suspenseful up until the ending which I saw coming from the moment a certain character showed up on screen. The best supernautral film I had seen in a long time and has still not been topped is The Others. Some might say the ending was a deliberate rip off of The Sixth Sense, but it worked for me because of the slow buiding atmosphere of the film. The remake of "One Missed Call" looks promising. The eye 2 was a wonderful excursion into the Supernatural. I just hold a soft spot in my heart for a good haunted house story. It's what made the Original "The Haunting" so good, but was lost in the glossy remake years ago. 1408 - Sigokat - 06-15-2008 Sorry to be a reviver of dead threads, but I just watched 1408 for the first time tonight. Can someone please explain to me WTF this was all about? Especially the very end?? While watching this film I found myself wanting to throw MYSELF out of the window of my little room, but I decided against it since my window is only about 5 feet off the ground and I probably would have just had a few cuts and scrapes instead of the desired outcome. But still...it might be worth it after watching this...this...thing. :prrr: 1408 - bones weep tedium - 06-15-2008 sigokat Wrote:Sorry to be a reviver of dead threads, but I just watched 1408 for the first time tonight. Sorrel and I watched this a while ago, and I remember being mildly unimpressed by it. I thought that the scene at the beginning with Samuel L Jackson was really good - all the things that Jackson was offering Cusack not to stay in the room only pursuading Cusack more that he was being stitched up was very effective dramatic tension (I mean, we all knew the room was haunted, right? ) The film steadily went downhill from there, and got down right incomprhensible at the very end - and not in a good David Lynch type way. :hand:
I think that the room was haunted and that Cusack destroyed it to try and kill the evil spirits. Instead he just set them loose, as his apparition in the back of Jackson's car at the end demonstrates that the haunted isn;t localised to the room anymore.
1408 - Kenji - 11-23-2008 Yesterday was the opening day, and....yes, I saw it. This was really really scary! In the based on the novel by King, "Pet Sematary" was the most scary movie until now. But now, "1408" was the most scary. :eek6: 1408 - colburn0004 - 11-23-2008
I think that the room was haunted and that Cusack destroyed it to try and kill the evil spirits.

I was completely confused and had to check out this ending cause it isn't the ending I saw. Found out the one your talking about was the Director's cut. I never saw the alternate ending but I think it sounds a little better IMO. But overall I thought the movie was ok but I think if cusack wasnt in it, it probably wouldn't even be ok. 1408 - johntfs - 12-02-2008 colburn0004 Wrote:I was completely confused and had to check out this ending cause it isn't the ending I saw. It was a decent enough movie, though I agree that it would've been a lot worse without somebody of Cusack's talent carrying it. I'm with all those who mention Jackson. That man improves whatever movie he happens to be in. "I just don't want to clean up the mess." Cool line right there. |
