Opinion wanted for Freakshow - Scott Miller - 10-02-2006

I've only read it in its entirety once way back when I first bought it, so even glancing through the 'about the authors' section failed to jog my memory sufficiently enough to recall which ones I didn't care for, but they're there. It doesn't mean I don't admire the writers' accomplishment, it just means I'm a picky reader; not every style appeals to me, and in any anthology of mixed writers I'm usually bound to encounter at least a couple of stories that don't 'do it' for me.

Just finished Freakshow. I had been ducking reading it for fifteen years. I hate anthologies. This one was excellent. Really great characters. 2 or 3 of the stories were a little weak but on the whole they were top notch. Everything flowed together really well.

When is the revised edition going to be available?

I know it was mentioned in a different thread but I cant remember which one. Smile

I haven’t read it yet, sounds like I ought to try and find a copy. I don’t want to hijack this thread, but I haven’t read the SIMS either and was planning on making it my newest edition to the FPW collection.

A great addition it will be; Sims is a classic.

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but I've assembled all my story and interstitial materials from Freak Show, and added 10k of new text. The result will be The Peabody-Prather Traveling Circus & Oddity Emporium - a small-press publication that should go up for pre-order soon.

You did mention it earlier in this thread...
fpw Wrote:I have rewritten my parts of the anthology, added new characters and subplots, and gathered it all together as =The Peabody-Prather Traveling Circus & Oddity Emporium=. It will be published in the near future by a small press. You'll hear about it soon. Ozymandias Prather appears in =All the Rage=, but these events occur in the spring-summer following =Harbingers=.

But it bears repeating.

I can't wait to get a good copy of FREAK SHOW. I was only able to find a beat up paperback with that strange cover. And to have additional material is thrilling. I love FREAK SHOW.

NB: It's just my material - I don't have rights to anyone else's - so it's not really Freak Show.

But if you want a beautiful book, get the Borderlands hardcover. It's oop and pricey, though.

Duh, even though you posted about it twice, I didn't get that it's a different book. It's not "Freak Show" but contains your work from "Freak Show" with additonal material written by you. So it's only your writing, not the short stories written by all the other writers. Now I get it. I'm just a little slow.

A nearly whole new book, that's even more to look forward to!

When I've got some extra dough, I'll check out the Borderlands edition of "Freak Show."

Does the new book reveal even more about Oz et al?

A little. It's got a new character or two. I wanted the material in a stand-alone edition because of its connection to All the Rage in particular and the Adversary Cycle in general.

The story takes place contemporaneously with Bloodline and ahead through that summer (as does The Touch) until the equinox in the Pine Barrens.

Who knows? Maybe the Peabody Circus will stop near 14-year-old Jack's hometown and the lad will see the Device - exhibited by Jacob Prather. And maybe Jacob will be asking around if there'd been any birth defects in the past year.
