It seemed to me that I didn't get an SSN until my very late teens...but I wasn't sure if my memory was starting to fail me. So glad others had a similar memory! Smile

Country's gettin' slack. I got my SS card in the 7th grade. When I was 19, I mistook it for my draft card and burned it.

Big Grin

Not to worry. By the late 1980's if you wanted to claim a child as a dependant on your income tax return you had to put that child's SSN on the return. Rolleyes

For the sake of the YA books I'm placing Jack's birthdate in 1969. It wasn't until the mid-1980s that your child needed a SSN to be deductible on your taxes, so most kids in Jack's generation didn't have one. By happenstance, Jack always worked off the books, so he never needed one. Colleges didn't require it back then.

I never even questioned why Jack wouldn't have an SS#. Like others on the board, I didn't get one until I started working, but that was long ago and far away.

Ah, Penn State. My favorite Division IAA football team (Duquesne's my favorite Div IA). Do you go there?

I remember back in the '70s, when fellow students were burning their draft cards, I kept my draft card (I've since decided the draft violated the 13th Amendment, but I was younger then) and ceremonially burnt my SS Card as a show of defiance against the Welfare State and Socialism. I had to get a replacement in '97 to start teaching at IU. I went through a lot of soul-searching before getting it. To me, you might as well put "666" as your SSN, because "The Beast" would love the control Government has over us. Come to think of it, maybe I'll burn my current SS Card next time I barbecue!
