Like me, he didn't have to have an SSN when he went off to college. Now, he's have som 'splainin' to do. It was a freer country then. It seemed to me that I didn't get an SSN until my very late teens...but I wasn't sure if my memory was starting to fail me. So glad others had a similar memory! When I was 19, I mistook it for my draft card and burned it. How does Jack not have a Social Security # - webby - 06-19-2006 Bluesman Mike Lindner Wrote:Country's gettin' slack. By the late 1980's if you wanted to claim a child as a dependant on your income tax return you had to put that child's SSN on the return. How does Jack not have a Social Security # - fpw - 06-19-2006 For the sake of the YA books I'm placing Jack's birthdate in 1969. It wasn't until the mid-1980s that your child needed a SSN to be deductible on your taxes, so most kids in Jack's generation didn't have one. By happenstance, Jack always worked off the books, so he never needed one. Colleges didn't require it back then. How does Jack not have a Social Security # - Vargas - 06-19-2006 Aha--see, I knew there was a valid answer. Thank you Mr. Wilson. The books have a whole new meaning to me now. hahahah. How does Jack not have a Social Security # - Maggers - 06-19-2006 I never even questioned why Jack wouldn't have an SS#. Like others on the board, I didn't get one until I started working, but that was long ago and far away. How does Jack not have a Social Security # - Weatherford - 06-22-2006 Anyone want mine?? I remember back in the '70s, when fellow students were burning their draft cards, I kept my draft card (I've since decided the draft violated the 13th Amendment, but I was younger then) and ceremonially burnt my SS Card as a show of defiance against the Welfare State and Socialism. I had to get a replacement in '97 to start teaching at IU. I went through a lot of soul-searching before getting it. To me, you might as well put "666" as your SSN, because "The Beast" would love the control Government has over us. Come to think of it, maybe I'll burn my current SS Card next time I barbecue!
