Some Movie News - XiaoYu - 06-08-2004

I didn't say Jack has to use martial arts (though self-defense is a form of it and Jack's life often depends on that when it comes to close quarters. Man, I'll never forgot the fork job in Haunted Air.) But it's totally conceivable that the Chinese Kusum, especially if they go with him being hundreds/thousands of years old, knows martial arts. The original Kusum himself seems to specialize in kicking things in The Tomb. ('Swift kick in the neck;' I remember even Jack being impressed by the kicked down door on the ship.) And I'm not talking about flying around; that's not real. I'm talking about down-to-earth, hand to hand, real-time stuff.

Anyway, I'm just speculating on what might change between the movie and novel, due to what's already going to be different. The China location's going to be interesting; hope they'll take full advantage of the temples and scenery. As to why it's filming there....cheaper, maybe?

The Rakoshi are part of the Otherness so it really doesn't matter what nationality the poor creatures are. I just hope they still have that awesome maw. Cool

FPW, how involved are you in the scriptwriting and how involved will you be in the production? Please keep a stern eye on everything so is doesn't end up a disaster like "The Keep". Thank you.

Oh, and Peter Krause for Jack! Smile

FPW doesn't write the script. Beacon hires screenwriters for that.

Yeah, I knew that. I meant how much are they letting him comment and share his opinions on the script and production? I know that most of the time once it is sold the original authors never see anything again until release. It looks like they are being really cool right now keeping him up to date and stuff, but you never know...

Does he even have some sort of contract beyond the option? And if so, does he have any stipulations regarding how much he can be involved in there? Just curious, well a little more than that actually. They better not fuck up Jack.

I completely agree. No messing with The Jack.

I'm also curious how much say authors have over the movie version of their books. I heard J.K Rowling was pretty deeply involved in the making of the Potter movies, but I don't know if every author has that opportunity.

When all the majors are bidding on your books, you get a LOT of say. But for us mortals...

Actually, he does. If you have read any of the first books in the series, you'll notice that when he works out on the roof of his apt. building, he often practices Tae Kwon Do until he's a sweaty mess. Now, granted, TKD isn't Gong Fu--it isn't even Chinese, it's Korean--but it is an eastern martial art and Jack does use it (although not exclusively since we have plenty of examples of old-fashioned NYC ass-kickings, too).
