I've spent so much time studying everyone else, cast-wise, I never really gave any thought to Jack. Thomas Jane would be excellent, although I think that Reynolds is more everyman and therefore fits the part better.
Here are some other options:
Gerard Butler hasn't carved out an action/something role for himself anywhere yet (Check out P.S. I Love You).
Nathan Fillion (of Firefly/Serenity fame) would also be awesome as Jack [Canadian, eh!].

Actually, I'm still in pretty damn good shape. I've got great ab (not abs, just one ab). Whereas some guys would die to have a sixpack, I've got a half-keg, and it's growing every day! When it comes to throwing my weight around as old Jack, I would be a real heavyweight!

Just a thought. I've read every single RMJ book out there, and this is just my insight. Lemme know what ya think.
Agree with both these choices, though we need to get Hirsch eating donuts and bacon grease now so he's "Abe-sized" for filming.
I also like TJ as Jack. He's a good action guy, fairly non-descript, able to play good/bad, and can hide his physique under typical RJ wardrobe (jeans and a flannel).
I can't buy Ryan Reynolds as Jack. I've seen him in Smokin' Aces, Amityville, and a few others, and he just doesn't carry himself with the air of authority that TJ does.

He was the bad guy in "Long kiss goodbye" with Geena Davis.

While I do not disagree that TJ has an "air of authority" and (as stated before) could be a good Jack...is an air of authority really what Jack has?
IMO, it is the lack of an air of authority that makes Jack blend in with the rest of the sheep (read as you, me and the rest of the population). TJ would have to play it much less intense that his usual roles if he was to seem average, which Jack tries so hard to do.
IMO, Reynolds can play average much better than TJ...and he can play intense (Amityville), so he's fine with me.
Nathan Fillion also has that unobtrusive thing going which would make it easy for him to play Jack.
So you can mark down TJ as my third choice, with Fillion 1st and Reynolds 2nd.
