Favorite Movie Soundtracks - Maggers - 11-21-2004

What are your favorite movie soundtracks?

Mine are, in no particular order:

Last of the Mohicans
Gone With the Wind
Bandits
Shrek
Gladitor
The Third Man
Psycho
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Kill Bill, Vol. 1
The Long Journey Home (not a movie, but a PBS special about the Irish in America)
The earlier James Bond movies (I'm particularly fond of "You Only Live Twice")
The Night of the Hunter (I don't know that this qualifies for a soundtrack, but Charles Laughton's use of Robert Mitchum's whistling and singing that hymn was so damn eerie!)
LOTR
The Great Escape

And I know there are many more. But that's what I can come up with now.

Well, the king of soundtracks just has to be Quentin Tarantino, so anything by him would feature as a favourite for me. Especially the two Kill Bills.
Other than that, I'm a huge Aimee Mann fan, so Magnolia is a must.
Of the Star Wars series, A New Hope and Empire are both good, the others not so great.
As an album in its entirety, Natural Born Killers is a great listen. It really works if listened to from start to finish.
There are probably loads more, but I have to say that music heard in films tends to sound much better in the context of the film. Rarely does it work as well when you get it home on CD!

I think some of this topic has come up before within other contexts. For me:

The whole Star Wars series, with Empire probably being my overall soundtrack favorite, though there's great stuff in all of them.

The Indiana Jones series, with Raiders as the favorite (the Ark theme is amazing).

Conan the Barbarian, an incredibly good score by Basil Poledouris.

The Black Hole by John Barry (probably just about the only redeeming quality of that film! Smile ).

Titanic I agree on; that stupid song got overplayed to the point of making it sickening, but it is a very good score.

The whole Lord of the Rings series; great work by Howard Shore.

Schindler's List; John Williams shows great versatility with a very subtle, emotional score.

The Crow; "Burn" by The Cure is worth the price of the CD by itself for me, and I'm not even a fan. Smile

The Terminator by Brad Fiedel (and to a lesser extent T2).

A Clockwork Orange; great work by Walter/Wendy Carlos, especially the opening title adaptation from music for the funeral of Queen Mary.

The Last Temptation of Christ; Peter Gabriel's Passion album is astonishing.

Rabbit-Proof Fence; same answer!

2001: A Space Odyssey; I thought the use of György Ligeti's Requiem during the Monolith scenes was genius.

And while it's not a movie, I'd say Christophe Beck has done some of the best scores I've ever heard with his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (particularly seasons 2 and 3, and the last episode of season 5).

That's all I can think of for now. Man, I'm a geek.

I'd have to say my favourite of recent times is Moulin Rouge. Loved the film, played the soundtrack to death!

Oh, yeah. Lawrence Of Arabia is nice score. And......you forgot "Ghost". That was beautiful score by Maurice Jarre, too. Smile

Yes, John Williams is maestro! No one can match him at music. Nevertheless, I am James Horner fan. :p
