"Being Julia" - Maggers - 02-20-2005
I just saw "Being Julia." Annette Bening is the movie, and she carries it beautifully. She's nominated for Best Actress, and for my money, she deserves to win.

Hilary Swank
Catalina Sandino Moreno
Kate Winslet
Imelda Staunton
I haven't seen Imelda Staunton's performance in "Vera Drake." Catalina Sandino Moreno is good but not Oscar worthy. Kate Winslet was terrific in "Eternal Sunshine," but can't compare. And while Hilary Swank was superb in "Million Dollar Baby," she shares the movie nearly equally with Clint Eastwood, and to a lesser degree, Morgan Freeman.
The trouble is, probably all of 3 people have seen "Being Julia." It's not the sort of movie to make a lot of money. It takes place in 1938 London. Bening plays a middle aged theater star coming to grips, in the most wonderful way, with her advancing age. She positively glows in her myriad closeups, unafraid to show the few wrinkles that she has. Unlike her husband whose handsome good looks have been savaged by plastic surgery, Bening seems not to care or to want to save her lovely face. She has no need. She is growing older with grace and dignity.
There is barely a scene without Bening in "Being Julia." It's a masterful performance, nuanced and funny and she plays her character with great wit.
Well, I don't know if Bening will win. It seems the odds are on Swank. But I'd love it if she did.

I'll have to make a point of seeing this one. The only movie I've seen Annette Bening in was Open Range, and I loved her performance ... her character ... her "presence."
Speaking of "presence," how about Colleen Dewhurst?

Collen Dewhurst certainly had presence. She filled the screen and stole the stage, and dominated the small screen when she played Candice Bergen's mother on "Murphy Brown". She played the Red Queen in a TV version of "Alice in Wonderland." Can you think of a better choice?
I also found her a tad intimidating and often downright scary. Her voice was so deep at the end; must have been years of cigarettes to make it so ragged.
Nevertheless, she was fascinating.

Yes, "Being Julia" would classify as a chick flick, a really, really good chick flick. It's a terrific and enjoyable movie.

Is there such a thing as a good chick flick? Until my wife told me differently I had thought that "The Bride of Chucky" was a great chick flick. I also thought "Alien Vs. Predator" was a great chick flick. C'mon! You had to admit there was some chemistry between that gal that lead the expedition and the predator she teamed up with. Maybe if the predator used a breath mint who knows how far that relationship could have gone.

Aw, jeez...AVP...what a fiasco. The first two ALIENS movies were classics, the first PREDATOR was a fine, fine action flick, but AVP...(pardon me while I cry, just for a little bit.)

I'll agree AVP could have been better, but there was some cool action scenes in it. Most notably at the end when they were fighting the queen alien. Still, the supporting characters had dialogues no better than you would hear from any characters in a Roland Emmerich film (ID4, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow). Ed Wood wrote better dialogue than Emmerich!

I always thought "The Stepford Wives" (the original with Katherine Ross) was a great chick flick. It had great chicks, and it's a flick.
