Is this the same "The Grudge" movie that Buffy's Sarah Michelle Gellar is filming? I believe her movie is an American remake of a Japanese horror film.

You are correct. Ju-On started as a straight-to-video in Japan. After two s-t-v films they got a bigger budget and two theatrical releases. Now the same director (and a lot of the same crew) is doing an American version set in Japan. Should prove to be interesting.
