Repairman Jack Netflix Series - repairmanrich - 04-12-2013

So a few years ago I posted a n idea for a Premium channel (Hbo, Showtime) RJ TV series. It was well received and a lot of good discussion followed. A few years past and I came back to continue on the forum but forgot both my username and password. So I just created a new one to discuss Netflix.

Now I know that our hero FPW has been fighting the good fight to get some sort of film or tv adaptation forever, and I am sure he is sick of it all together. All I can say to that is thank you for your continued effort, and we all still pray/hope it bears fruit sometime. But on to my point...

Should it ever bear fruit I think Netflix would be a perfect fit for an RJ series and here is why. Those of us who have netflix instant know that for the last year or so , it has been adding more and more original programming for our viewing pleasure. And for the most part imho, the quality has been stellar. You only have to look at Kevin Spacey in House of Cards for proof. And whats even better is that due to the sales of seasons on dvd and netflix like subscription services, people have been getting used to and wanting every episode of each season right away, one after another. So netflix releases the entire season for us to devour as fast as we please.

Now the Founder of netflix has said that eventually he wants netflix to be 60% original programming, and the rest movies on demand, so it's safe to say he is hungry for more tv show ideas, and waiting for the one show idea to make netflix a must have subscription service. Its Dexter, Its Game of Thrones if you will. I believe in my heart of hearts, that Repairman Jack is that show. While I always hold out hope for netflix to bring back something like Carnivàle, I would happily drop all other movies channels to have RJ.

Now like I said, I know that RJ is in development hell, and that its still far from coming to fruition, I simply think that should it ever come to that point, that Netflix would be a wonderful home for our man Jack. Thank you all for your time.

Marty

Yeah... I agree with Tony. That's the first viable idea I've heard in ages regarding turning RJ into a series.

A series is really the only way it could be done properly, given the enormity of the story.

I always have this conversation w my father, and although I would love to see jack's story played out on the screen of some sort, I really wouldn't mind it never happening for the simple fact that I KNOW how great the whole big story is , but for someone who never read them all or only knows some, a bad portrayal (which is usually what happens with film adaptations) could ruin everything and that would make me sad. I've talked jack up way too much and it resonates w me so deeply that I'd hate for someone to butcher it. On the contrary , it would be awesome if it was done over a few seasons and the whole story was told with flashbacks (Lost-style) telling the story of the adversary cycle. That'd be so sweet.

In some ways Person of Interest reminds me of Repairman Jack. The same computer that IDs everyone else keeps those two men anonymous...

I saw the movie version of The Keep back in the 80's, when I was about 15. I thought it was terrible - so terrible, that when I looked at my first Repairman Jack novel in the library, I probably wouldn't have given it more than a glance had I known then that the two stories were connected.

I've since read The Keep, and while it's not the best novel in the Alternate History it is far better than the movie.

I guess my point is that I'd be wary of watching any adaptation of Repairman Jack, because if Hollywood couldn't get The Keep right, which was a fairly straightforward, stand-alone story, what chance would it have with the entire Repairman Jack series? You'd need an enormous special effects budget just to do Nightworld alone. And if it wasn't big budget, you'd end up with something camp, like a 1970's Doctor Who episode. I'm not sure I could handle that.

I don't mean to sound discouraging, but some stories - usually the best stories, cannot be properly told in anything but books. The best TV/Movie adaptations are usually of simple novels and plotlines geared towards young adults.

I am sympathetic to your point but your lack of faith needs to be introduced to A Song Of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones. They have done a masterful job of adapting that series to the acreen. And some would even say thy have improved some of the stories. Now more than ever is the perfect time to create a RJ series. As long as it was on a premium channel, and had good acting, I dont think you could fuck it up.
