What Got Me Back Into Reading - Smoke - 02-18-2013 I wanted to share more about how I stumbled upon FPW and his work. Now I don't remember exactly what happened, but what I do remember is stumbling across this Lovecraftian like synopsis for a book called Nightworld. The description of the creatures got me wanting to read the book so very much. After looking into it some more I find out I need to read some more books to really appreciate the novel. Now I had stopped reading for about 7 years. I used to have a bookshelf full of Stephen King, Koontz, and a nice varity of fantasy and sci-fi novels. Katrina took that away. Water under the bridge or water through my house, whatever. POSSIBLE SPOILERS for THE KEEP ahead... So I thought ok, The Keep, sounds fun. Maybe it will get be back into reading. I was so right; I loved it. What probably intrigued me the most was the background behind Glaeken and Rasalom. I found it interesting how Glaeken made it clear he was not a good guy, or rather that he didn't represent the force of good. The entire conflict between the two felt personal much unlike most good vs. evil battles which feel destined. Months later I got my hand on The Tomb and that was that. I don't know why I love this sort of supernatural mystery/horror approach to storytelling. It simply fascinates me. I am halfway through Legacies now and you can be sure I will let you all know how I feel about once I am finished. Sorry about you house and book collection though. Now if only I could forget everything I've read and be able to read all of Paul's books for the first time again. What Got Me Back Into Reading - The Mad American - 02-18-2013 Nice Smoke. I will say you have a lot of GREAT reading ahead of you both in the Adversary Cycle and the Repairman Jack books. I envy you in that it is all new to you. What Got Me Back Into Reading - Smoke - 02-19-2013 I finished Legacies and wanted to share my thoughts. I have enough threads on this board so I thought it was best not to make another. LEGACIES SPOILERS AHEAD Did I like Legacies? Yes. I didn't like it as much as The Tomb but I liked it. The thing that I found most intriguing about Legacies was the character Alison. Alison felt very genuine, or better yet, authentic, when it came to her emotions and reactions to her past abuse from her father. I realized this more than ever during the scene when she was letting it all out to Jack as she shredded the pictures. I am sure FPW spent a lot of time on that scene getting her words just right, trying to get the reader to understand how she felt. I loved how all the pieces fit perfectly together. I can only imagine how much work goes into a mystery like this. I mean putting together pieces you were given to solve a complex puzzle is much different than actually creating the pieces yourself. Everything made sense, everything. It was well done. I will start on Conspiracies tomorrow. =) |
