Fast and Furious - The new "Repairman Jack Movie" poll - Wapitikev - 04-12-2009

[Correction on poll question...the rest of the Poll question should read: ...the chances that Beacon/Relativity can land a director for Morgan's Repairman Jack script?]

So, Chris Morgan (screenwriter) and Relativity Media (production company), both of the perennially un-announced Repairman Jack movie, appear to have yet another hit on their hands...in 2008 it was Wanted, this year it's Fast and Furious...the sequel to the 2001 street racing, gear-fest.

The new Fast and Furious has 7 out of 10 stars on IMDB after one week of release.

It also notched the biggest ever April debut-weekend @ $71,000,000. That amount, BTW is more than FF: Tokyo Drift (another Chris Morgan & Relativity project) took in during its entire box-office run.

It even beat the Bourne Ultimatum's opening weekend.

As of Friday's box-office, the film has already taken in over $100 million, more than recovering its budget of $85,000,000.00. And, with a weak list of premiering movies this weekend, by the end of its second weekend, Fast and Furious could-out earn the entire box office take of the original film.

What other movies are "as good" as the new Fast and Furious? The following movies are all rated as good or (slightly) worse, out of ten, on IMDB: Quantum of Solace, The International, Eagle Eye, Wanted, Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull , 48 Hours, A Knight's Tale, Backdraft, Bad Boys, Batman Returns (with Pfeiffer as Catwoman), Blade and Blade2, Bon Cop Bad Cop, Conan the Barbarian, Death Race (with Statham), Conspiracy Theory, Constantine, Desperado, Die Hard and Die Hard2, Ghostbusters, Hellboy, High Fidelity, Hostel, I Robot, Independence Day, Jurassic Park, Lethal Weapon2 and Lethal Weapon3, Men In Black, Mission Impossible and Mission Impossible III, Natural Born Killers, National Treasure and National Treasure2, Passchendaele, Payback, Pirates of the Caribbean and Pirates of the Caribbean3, Pitch Black, Point Break, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Rocky, Romancing the Stone, Shoot 'em Up, Silverado, Smokin' Aces, Sneakers, Stakeout, Stargate, Starship Troopers, Superman2 and Superman Returns, The Brave One, Hitman, The Italian Job (with Wahlberg), The Last Boyscout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Mask of Zorro, Matrix Reloaded, The Mummy (with Fraser), The Recruit, The Tomas Crown Affair (with Brosnan), The Transporter, They Live, Top Gun, Ultraviolet, Underworld, Underworld2 and Underworld3, Vantage Point, or Zero Effect.

[catches breath]

So, while it's not Lord of the Rings, A New Hope, or even Iron Man, as far as action movies go, it's got some legs (wheels?).

The real question is, now that Chris Morgan is hotter than ever, is he hot enough to enable Relativity/Beacon to FINALLY get a director for his Repairman Jack script?

I haven't seen either of the last two movies, so I would vote 'no.'
\
Maybe I'll see them when those two movies come to cable. Certainly, "Fast and Furious" would have to come to cable. It took 'four' movies to have at least one of the stars reprise their role in the original?

I would like to see a Repairman Jack movie, and expect them to mess it up a little bit, but I'm holding my breath, waiting for Hell to freeze over.

From what I've gathered here, hell will have to freeze over before this movie gets made. It better be worth the wait. Big Grin

I thought it was note-worthy that one of the characters in WANTED that wasn't really in the comic was enigmatically named The Repairman.

Personally, I think that's as close to the big screen Chris Morgan is gonna bring Jack.

He was the tosser who kept beating tied-to-a-chair-Wesley, right?

Wasn't in the comic? Ya don't say.

Wonder if his given name was Jack?

Naaaaah. Jack's not a joiner. He'd never hang with the Weavers.

Good catch, though.

After these two scripts by him I hope its when hell freezes over. I want to see a repairman jack movie more than anything, but not with this writer. I didn't like Wanted or Fast and Furious. I thought this F&F was the worst of all of them (and I HATED Tokyo Drift). Both of these movies had IMO story issue. They seemed to get to the point to slow but once they got the point the movie was over. Left me with a feeling as if they didnt have much to the movie. I don't know I might be off a little but I'd rather hell freeze over and have a different writer.

I agree with the previous poster... Find a new writer. This Fast and the Furious is rated extremely low on RottenTomatoes.com and the only positive reviews were based on dumbing down your expectations and enjoying the action. For this adaptation to work well on screen you need a crafty surgical writer, not a blunt object. I wouldn't worry about great directors flocking to a project that this writer is attached to. Sorry if I come across as negative, but I would want a quality product put out there instead of CG bloated lemon.

Cole & Dave...I see your point, but FPW himself says that Chris Morgan's (last) version of the script is "vastly improved and sticks to the novel"...and that he's satisfied with it.

So, I'm willing to give CM the benefit of the doubt that action is action, but it's not the only genre at which CM has the ability to write well (read as box-office success).

BTW, Fast and Furious already out-earned the original movie's entire box-office take.

I understand he's had commercial success with his scripts but I credit it more to the properties then works. F&F had that first weekend big open which I mostly credit to the return cast and all the fans that have built up over the years but from what I saw it took a huge drop in the second and third weeks. Regardless if Paul thinks its greatly improved script (even if it was horrible) I'm going to see it because it's jack. Just don't know if the writer of the script is going to help it much on getting made or get unknowing people to the theaters to see it.
