The Day The Earth Stood Still - Kenji - 12-18-2008 First of all, I like original film. That idea(all electricity stop) was very original as classic SF movie. So when I heard about remake, I worried about it. Today I went to a theatre see this remake version. Well....not bad, but this is not great, of course. Why should we call it "remake"? I thought we shouldn't call it as "remake". This is totally different movie. And I also thought this title should have "The Day the Earth Broke Still". SFX and sound effect and cinematography were excellent. But some casting was mistake. I like Jennifer Connelly, so she's okay. Keanu Reeves is Klaatu? Hmm.....okay. But Kathy Bates is Secretary of Defense? John Cleese is serious professor? Gimme a break.... :dontknow: The Day The Earth Stood Still - cobalt - 12-18-2008 Ok, it's out now. I'll have to make some time this w/e to see it. Thanks for the review Kenji. The Day The Earth Stood Still - Kenji - 12-18-2008 cobalt79 Wrote:Ok, it's out now. The Day The Earth Stood Still - johntfs - 12-18-2008 Keanu is really good as Klaatu, playing him as a being called to perform an unpleasant but necessary task. He's the best part of the movie. And he really is a good part. The worst part of the movie is the writing. On multiple occasions, characters take actions because... that's what the script tell them to do at that particular time and place. The worst example of this
is with the kid. The movie spends time talking up the devotion the kid had to his soldier father who died in Iraq. Also, the kid is hostile to Klaatu even before knowing that he's an alien. However, after Klaatu kills two helicopters' worth of SOLDIERS, the kid begins warming up to Klaatu.
Can I get a WTF? This is just another crappy knock off done as a remake of a classic film. I see this film as yet another one of Liberalwoods "Message" Films. Reeves wasn't bad as Klattu, as Klattu as an Alien doesn't have to show much human emotion, something Reeves is a Pro at. This film is crap with a decent visual display. And Johntfs is right about the kid. Bullshit storyline. The Day The Earth Stood Still - GeraldRice - 12-18-2008 Legion Wrote:Some nice CGI but thats about it. Reeves as Klaatu is a really good choice and Jennifer Connelly looks like she's in her 20s. But this movie hurries to trip over itself. Like with the scientists.
You just had this giant ball land in the middle of Central Park. A mere few minutes ago you thought it would destroy the Earth. Why would you allow the best scientific minds you have access to walk ANYWHERE NEAR IT???
And I get why Jaden Smith's character didn't like Klaatu from the start. He thought his stepmother was already trying to replace his dead father. But nonetheless, he was very annoying.
I wish Klaatu had hit him with that car. And the whole warming up to Klaatu after he killed 2 helicopters' worth of soldiers thing kind of didn't jibe.
And here's the big one.
If it was only a matter of turning everything off at the end of the movie why go through all the riggamarole and just flip the switch when you arrive on the planet?
The coolest thing about the movie was GORT and that placental stuff Klaatu used to mend his wounds. But this is a definite wait-to-renter. The Day The Earth Stood Still - Brian - 12-18-2008 Kenji Wrote:milewinkgrin: w/e is week-end Thanks for all the reviews. I'll wait to rent it. The Day The Earth Stood Still - LolaRennt - 12-18-2008 I'm thinking that I'll just get it from Netflix. Fortunately I don't think the boyfriend has any interest in this movie - he's far more interested in seeing Eastwood's latest flick, I think. If he really wants to see this movie, though, I'll tell him that I'll sputter about the bad writing during the movie. That will get him to change his mind. |
