Every few years 2 movies that are strikingly similar come out around the same time. There was Armageddon and Deep Impact, Volcano and Dante's Peak, and Independence Day and The Arrival. With this movie that is similar to a Planet of the Apes movie I never saw, Sims immediately came to mind.
