The Strangers/Funny Games - Tony H - 09-16-2008 For some odd reason I decided to spend my weekend watching 2 home invasion films. That was on Saturday. I spent all day Sunday checking my locks repeatedly. Both films are sufficiently creepy and deal with visitors tormenting a homes occupants. Funny Games has Naomi watts, Tim Roth and their child being unrelentingly tormented by Michael Pitt and some other dude. It breaks the fourth wall with Pitt frequently addressing the viewer. It was a wonderful film wrought with peril but there was one scene that ripped me from the experience and I was never able to fully get back into the film. Up until that Scene Funny Games trumped The Strangers. The Strangers was a more straight up horror film about a couple being held hostage in their home by a group of masked intruders who move with Michael Meyers-esque flair...blending in with the shadows, lurking quietly in the background unbeknownst to their inteded victims. The strangers succeeds in its simplicity, 2 people trapped in a remote house by faceless intruders who want to taunt them throughout the night until the very end...whatever "the end" might mean for the couple. 2 good movies worth watching back to back. The remake is a shot for shot remake of the original for US audiences. If you watch it, other than different actors, there will be nothing new. That's what we call "remake". :hand: The Strangers/Funny Games - Tony H - 09-17-2008 KRW Wrote:I've seen "Funny Games" and I know exactly the scene you're refering too. It confused the heck out of me, I don't understand the point of that one moment in the film. The only thing I can think of is that the film is very self-aware, hence the character addressing the audience directly. He knows he is in a film and as a result knows he can manipulate it. Other than that I still feel like it ruined the experience for me. If anyone else has seen the film and knows of the scene, feel free to add your 2 cents. The Strangers/Funny Games - Sigokat - 09-17-2008 Well I just added Funny Games to the top of my Netflix queue. I never actually heard of it before reading this thread, but now Im curious about this scene. Will post my review after I watch it. Is The Strangers the one with Liv Tyler? If you're in the mood for more of these, you might try Them. It's sounds similar to your description of The Strangers. I don't know how she is in real life but she is just charming and I find her endearing...made The strangers very difficult to watch.Yes "THEM" is a French film with the same concept from what I have read. i forgot about htis film and now I will add it to my queue. The Strangers/Funny Games - GeraldRice - 09-29-2008 I just saw Funny Games. I get the scene, but I still didn't like it. It actually makes sense if you take into account the conversation the two killers had near the end, but I still didn't like it. |
