Anybody but me watching this on HBO? I was lukewarm after the first episode, but I loved the one tonight. The books are a guilty pleasure of mine, and I am truly loving Anna Paquin as Sookie.

I enjoyed the first episode a lot, but I missed last night's. I'll catch it on demand. Yeah, Anna Paquin is fabulous. I didn't realize it was based on books, plural. Tell me about them, Noelie.

I've caught both episodes and have enjoyed thus far what I've seen. I have read the books as well. I think I've posted into the "What are you reading thread" about them. I just love Sookie, she is soooooooo much more than she appears.

A good bit of the base idea for the show is strikingly similar to a WONDERFUL book called Vamped by David Sosnowski. Difference is that once the artificial blood was invented he and his vampire buddies decided to turn ALL of humanity. Now there are no mortals left ( except of course those on illegal farms).
Caught the show online because I thought maybe it was something to do with Vamped. I was greatly disappointed. The show seems aimed solely at females. The only part of the show aimed at men is the very random nudity ( which I am not complaining about, btw).
The mrs loves it, of course. I think the characters are very poorly written and some of the character themes are just tired. Honestly I hope the show either gets MUCH better or it crashes and burns.

The first episode was good if not a little slow, but I never got bored with it. Haven't watched last nights yet but it's on Tivo so I'll get to it in the next few days.

They are kind of chick lit, but I find that they have a little more edge than that genre usually has. They are fun, fun, FUN to read. Of course, the fact that they are set in Louisiana makes me love them even more. I swear, I know half the people in those books.

Last night's was much better, imo.

I've made similar comments before about women and vampires, so this shouldn't be any surprise....the guy vamps on this series could bite me any day....wow!
And Eric's appearance will have me glued to the screen.....

I enjoyed last night's episode a lot more than the first one. I hate the willy-nilly pass/fail of aspects of vampire legend. I don't like the having to be invited into the home thing- never did. It's a romantic notion that just doesn't jibe with a brutal predator of humankind.
Also, I do NOT like Sookie's friend. In the first minute we are introduced to her we see her as lazy and angry and in the extreme on both parts. It's on par with queueing a bar scene and Paddy O'Malley is already slamming back his fifth shot of Scotch and it's eye-rollingly annoying. And if that's not enough she regularly plays the gotcha game with people; suggesting something and when people agree lambasting them for agreeing. The signified monkey routine is tired.
But it's an interesting twist to see someone so... independent-minded have such a crush on Sookie's brother. At least he's unlikeable in a likeable way, though, y'know, being harmlessly dumb and all.

Gerald hit the nail on the head with Sookie's friend. I don't like her. she has some great lines but to me she is entirely unlikeable.
The series as a whole is interesting, I really like the Lousianna dirty south feel to it. I can almost smell the crawfish boils. Anna Panquin is great as Sookie, she can convey so much with a look, though I am curious as to what is in store for her. Clearly she has a lot of backstory that has yet to be revealed.
Last nights episode was much more enjoyable than the premiere...I am curious to see where this goes. As a rule I am not a fan of vampire films/books, etc. so it takes a lot out of me to sit through a show based on this theme but I am pleasantly surprised so far.
